reached agreement on procedural'
details and delegates expect 10
work harmoniously in the task of
setting up a provisional govern
ment lor Korea, MaJ. Gen. A. V.
Arnold American delegate, said
today.
Arnold told a press conference
lhat discussions at the initial
meeting yesterday appeared to be
on a more friendly basis than at
a Joint preparatory conference
last month that left Russians and
Americans split on several ques
tions.

Business Is Sold
Sisters, March 21 , (Special)
On March 1 one of the oldest bus
iness establishments in Sisters,
the Aitken drug store, opened its
doors under new management.
For 34 years the store was operat
ed by its owners, Mr. and Mrs.
George E. Aitken, with Mrs. Alt
ken carrying on the business after
her husband's death in 1944. :; I entry into the armed forces. SC2C

Mrs. Aitken and her son, Don
ald, a student at Sisters high
school, have purchased a new
home and plan to remain in Sis
ters. ,

Heads VA Office

eran of both world wars has been
appointed as manager of the Seat
tle regional office of the veterans
administration effective April 1st,
deputy administrator D. M. Shute
announced today.
. Ex-Colonel Lester H... Hall, a
native of the northwest, will re
place present manager Orvillo G.
Fairburn because of his long ex
perience in personnel work and
familiarity with, world war II vet
erans problems, Shute said.
Hall served as personnel officer
at Ft. Leonard Vcod, Mo., at the
engineering replacement center
and is a graduate of the command
and general staff school at Ft.
Leavenworth.
;' Colonel Hall was stationed at
Camp Abbot, as executive officer,
and'moved to Fort Lewis with the
army engineers when the Des
chutes camp was deactivated In

Crash Is Blamed
On Broken 'Prop'

A broken propclJor blade which
set up a vibration that caused
the right wing of an army C-47
transDort to break off in mid-air
! auuarently was responsible for
the violent deaths of 23 passen
gers and three crewmen Tuesday
near here, army officials dis
closed today.

nort's two three-bladed propellors
i either split or broke off in flight,
Col. Willard said, selling up a
tremendous vibration.;-
The plane's pilor, Capt. Richard
K. Young of Stockton, Calif., evi
dently tried to feather the engine
and stop the vibration, Willard
said.
He said wreckage of the right
engine disclosed that it had been
shut off and feathered. ,
The feathering operation takes
approximately eight seconds. Dur
ing that time, Col. Willard said,
the terrific vibration apparently
caused the transport s right wing
to tear off.

Sale of the weekly Madras Pio
neer, Jefferson county's only
newspaper, to W. H. Hall, for
merly mechanical superintendent
with the Telephone-Register at
McMlnnville, was announced to
day by Mrs. May B. Johnson,
owner of the paper since 192b.
Before coming to Oregon, Hall
published the Buhl, Ida., repub
lican. Later he was associated
with two brothers in publishing
the Lincoln county Leader at To
iprln. Ore. Hall is also a former
member of The Bend Bulletin me-1
chanlcal staff, in Bend.
