Philip Morris gained more than 4 points on announcement of a 2-for-l stock split. American Can rose 3 points and Du Pont 2Vi. The vise in rails began late Thursday and has been Increas ing in momentum since then. The stocks responded to Improved earnings, higher dividends In some Instances and estimates of a good year ahead. The rail strength In turn stimulated buy ing in other sections of the list. New York Central featured the market in volume. Also active were Delaware, Lackawanna & Western, Baltimore & Ohio, Le high Valley, and Northern Pacific which made new highs.
