Abandoned Car
Owner Located
What police believed yesterday
to have been an abandoned car
stolen in California, today turned
out to be a disabled machine be
longing to Dairy Hint on of Prlne
vllle, officers reported toduy. The
car was found apparently aban
doned early yesterday near Port
land avenue and Hill street and
was towed to police headquarters.
Later In the day Hinton ap
peared at the police station and
showed papers of ownership for
the car. He explained that a
small hose and can found In the
back of the car, and which police
suspected were used for stealing
gasoline, was used . by him in. ef
forts to make the vehicle run.
Failing in this, he said that he
had left it where, police found it
until he could have repairs made.

39 months of service with the
marines who recently returned
from overseas duty, has arrived
in Bend, to spend part of a 30-
day leave.: He was overseas 26
months. He wears the presidential
unit .citation and four service
stars - for participation in the
Guam, Saipan, Tlnian and Tarawa
engagements.
A former resident of Bend, Tom
graduated from the local high
school in 1935. He will report
June 18 at Santa Ana, Calif.,
where he will be assigned to the
naval air station. :
Mrs. Roosevelt's
Car in Tragedy
Middletown, N. Y., May 19 (IB
Four persons were killed and two
Injured today when Mrs. Eleanor
Roosevelt's convertible Bulck au
tomobile struck truck on Route
84 near Montgomery, N. Y. AU
six victims were negroes, police
said. They were riding in Mrs.
Roosevelt's car.
Police said the truck was
parked on the road and that the
Roosevelt car struck it. The truck
operator, Theodore Miller, 44, of
Danbury, Conn., was charged with
criminal negligence.
Mrs. Roosevelt's chauffeur,
James J. Johnson, Jr., 25, was one
of the Injured. Police said he was
driving the Buick.
The dead were Identified by
state police as Edison Mauldin of
Stewart Field; Daisy HI1L 20, of
Poughkeepsie, Edwina Riley, 19,
of New York, and Dorothy Har
ris, 19,, of Poughkeepsie. . . ,-
