Stocks Ascend
To New Highs
By Elmer C. Walzer
(United PreM Financial Editor)
New York, May 5 UP Stocks
rose to new highs since 1937 today
as Wall street looked into a pros
perous postwar future. Trading
increased.
Danish bonds reached new
highs since 1939 and other Euro
pean loans gained on anticipation
ot an early end ol the war against
Germany. Grain movements nar
rowed. Cotton firmed.
Gains in the stock market were
mostly fractional. Traders singled
out the so-called peace snares,
concentrating on such issues as
American Radiator in the build
ine division, the motors, soft
drink issues, glass stocks, some of
the air lines, and communications.
. notably International Telephone
issues.
The industrial average reached
a new higli since Sept. 4, 1937.
New tops were made by such
stocks as American Air Lines,
Briggs Manufacturing, Chrysler,
General Motors, blectnc . Auto
Lite. Grumman Aircraft, Coca-
Cola, Libbey-Owens-Ford Glass,
Standard Oil (N. J.), Schenley,
Phlleo. and Dow Chemical.
The Utility average was at its
best level since April 21, ishy.
Common stocks made small gains
while preferreds were up as much
as two points In Standard Gas $7
preferred. Rails were near their
eight-year high, union Racine
gained more than a point on pass
age by the house of a bill to re
peal land grant rates. Most build
ing issues rose with American
Radiator, which featured the
whole market in turnover.
