Cautious Selling
Lowers Stocks
New York. Aorl 23 tin Cau
tious spiling brought stocks down
from their highs late today when
President Truman called a conrer
ence with his military and foreign
affairs high command.
Earlier in the day the whole list
had moved ahead in continuation
of last week's substantial rally.
The reaction was only a minor
one, however, and reflected lacK
of demand rather than real pres
sure. The market started firm, fea
tured by activity in the packing
group, which responded to an
OPA program Involving a $15,000,
000 increase in meat subsidy pay
ments. Liquors made new highs.
The lower-priced motors turned
active and made new highs. A long
list of rails made new highs and
railroad equipments enjoyed a
better market. Steels rose under
the lead of Bethlehem which made
a new high. Numerous specialties
gained a point or more.
The Truman conference Item
set in motion a scries, of rumors
which in turn tended to keep some
buyers out of the market and led
to some realizing.
