For the first time, Bend high
school students are participating
In the State Speech meet being
held irt Corvallis today and tomor
row, it was reported at the high
school. Seven students, three of
whom attended the Llndfield col
lege meet several months ago,
are competing for state honors.
They are Marlys Prentice, Ken
Fretwell, Verdun Russell, the
'Lindfleld contestants, and Lee
Reinhart, Arlene Zastera and Har
old Gardner and Rosie Knight.
Chief of Police

Salem, Ore., April 13 ir Fred
E. Neely, 56, for the past five
years the chief of police of West
Salem, died at a Salem hospital
this week after an illness of
several years.
A native of Florence, Ore., he
had been active in municipal of
fairs. He leaves his widow, Mrs.
Hannah Neely,'" one sister and
three neioes. !
