Pacific Problems
Coleman's Topic
Analyzing situations in the Phil
Ipplnes, China and Japan, and
foretelling problems which will
confront this country In future
, dealings in those countries, Dr.
Norman F. Coleman, member of
the faculty of the Lewis and Clark
college in Portland, today ad
dressed C5 interested listeners at
a noon-day luncheon in the Pine
Tavern. Dr. Coleman s appearance
here was sponsored by the League
of Women Voters and the Ameri
can Association of University
Women.
Dr. Coleman said that he based
his opinions upon observations
made on three trips across the
Pacific, and his study of the coun
tries while there. He said that
world peace would never follow
until the people of the United
States tried to get a better under
standing of the Japs, and con
tended that this country should
try to remake the Nippon country
Into a democracy. He said that
Japan's principal problems are
difficult terrain necessitating sea
commerce, and its political and re
ligious systems.
Discusses China
China, the speaker said, suf
fers for lack of communications,
and said that the people of the
Americas should strive to assist
them in betterment of the Chinese
education, and to develop a feel
ing of nationalism among the pop
ulation. Coleman foresaw little difficul
ty in the Philippines becoming
. an Important and integral part of
world commerce after the war,
and he expressed the opinion that
this country would quickly rebuild
from the ruins of the war.
The speaker was Introduced by
Mrs. Meredith Bailey of Sisters.
