TH BEND BULLETIN. JBENP, OREGON, THURSDAY, APRIL 5, 1945 PAGE ELEYEN i ii m 9 ' "r Hospital Care for Casualties In Pacific Called Unexcelled By Edgar Kioe Burroughs . (Written for United Press) An Island Base in the Pacific (IP Th(s sn't a story of "bombs bursting in air," pr ,of Wgh hero ism. It is a report to the fathers and -mothers, the brothers and sisters, the sweethearts and wives whose men are casualties in army and navy hospitals. If a casualty lives long enough to get into the hands of the medical corps his chances of survival are . pretty ,clos,e to 100 per cent. I write that after spending a day in a navy hospital here. Per haps you would like to have your man back where the family doctor in whom you have so much con fide nee, and who. may have brought him into the world, could look after him with that fine hu manity and sympathy which has made the family doctor beloved. Don't worry. He is getting these things and more. Walking through ward after ward all day until my feet were worn off :to ,the ankles, I saw that same fine humanity and sym pathy evidenced by the nurses and the corpsmen. They are wonder ful. The nurses, trained and effi cient, also bring that spiritual lift that only a fine American girl can bring to American boys whose recent' feminine contacts have been with bare feet or shuffling sandals or tabi. Take Pride in Skill And the corpsmen. Of the many things the boys call them I heard only one that is printable "bed pan .commandos.." This is an ap pellation of affection, as is "pill rollers" in the army. Your men are getting not only expert and sympathetic nursing, but the best surgical and medical service that any nation can pro vide. I was shown one boy who had been suffering the agonies of sciatica. The nurse proudly ex hibited him as the f h-st patient to have had a certain operation per formed on him. He was her prize exhibit. I am sorry that 1 cannot give you a very intelligent de scription of the operation, but here is the gist of it: Between the two vertebrae that were pinching the sciatic nerve, the surgeqn in serted a gadget consisting-of a couple of silver plates and ball bearings. The pain was instantly relieved, never to return. Unless his parents are wealthy, the chances are that in civilian life he would never have had this operation. Then there was the man with a gangrenous leg. He had asked to meet me, and I found him in a private cubicle with a corpsman i n attendance. Ordinarily, h e would have certainly lost his leg or, possibly, his life. But they are going to save his leg and proba bly all his toes as well. The corps man was so proud of what they had accomplished that he damn near burst. He wanted me to wait half an hour until they removed the icepack so that I could see the leg. Shown Every Attention If you have men In army or navy hospitals, thank God that they are not at home, for they could not get better surgical and medical service there or anywhere else in the world. And don't worry about them. The nurses, the corps men, the Red Cross girls, the Gray Ladies look after their every com fortand the physicians and sur geons are such as you could not possibly afford unless you are very. rich. ..... Rather a freakish accident that happened when this . propeller of a Wildcat tighter plane, forced from its hub during a crash landing at a Pacific base, imbedded itself .in the trunk of a coconut palm, me to visit the hospital. I was sup posed to lift the boys' morale and give them some laughs, but the idea boomeranged. The boys did all that to me. They were a cheer ful, wonderful bunch. Miss Christine Herman of Washington, D. C, a Red Cross girl, took me by the hand and led me around. She being exceeding ly pulchritudinous, I was not hard to lead. And then there was an other beauteous Red Cross girl Josephine Jack of Beatrice, Neb., whose father is a close friend of the last of my schoolday friends, Bert Weston, who, like me, is older than God. It's a small world. Homemaking Wise use of leftover ' kitchen fats Is the first step in helping to increase collections of used household fats critically needed to make up a deficit in 1945 fats oils supplies, according to the home demonstration agent, Eliza beth H. Boeckli. Farm women and homemakers In small towns have been called on to contribute a large share of the 250 million pounds of used fats set as this year's goal, Miss Boeckli says, and the county ex tension office is cooperating with local salvage committees in boost ing Deschutes county's collec tions. Turning in all fat drippings and leftovers indiscriminately for sal vage may not do as much for the nation's fat supplies as using the good-flavored leftover fats in home cooking and then contrib uting to salvage any. excess fat or fat that is strong In flavor, the U. S. department of agriculture points out. The housewife who turns in four pounds of good bacon drip pings, for example, and then buys a four-pound jar of fat for her home cooking does not increase the overall fat supply, and indi vidually loses points and money on the exchange Miss Boeckli ex plains. All leftover fat can be saved and used again unless it is too strong in flavor or scorched, the specialists say. Practically all of these fats may be utilized in cook ing, and in most cases even add flavor to other dishes. Fats saved from cooking spoil more quickly than new fat, however, so should be kept cold and used as soon as possible, it is pointed out. - ' Rural housewives jare ,now a,n important source of the estimat ed potential 500 million pounds of used kHchen- fats yearly. Oppor tunities for salvaging ,used fats on the farm are h(w .greater (than those of .city housewjyes tjeqause of home production of meats on the farm and extension .use of poultry .and other fat sources. Rendering of waste fat is also important at ' butchering .time. Miss . Boeckli stresses that this type of lat-4he so-called "killing fat" is needed as much as jused household fat and represents a large volume. Although red points are not given for "killing fat," it can be sold at the going market price. ?IOBU' DOING I'JNE , . Fort Worth, Tex.
