stock market staged a general ad
vance today that carried the main
list to a further new high tor
more than seven years. Trading
again topped the million-share lev
el. Confirmation of Japanese radio
that U. S. forces had landed on
Iwo Jima and the successful
American army invasion of Cor
regidor played a part in stimulat
ing bullish confidence.
At the day's best levels the Dow
(nnac industrial averapp was at a
Lew peak since Sept. 17, 1937; the
Pfail average a new high since
A.r 51. 1937: the utility, a new
top since Aug. 17, 1937 and the
65-stock average a new high since
Aug. 31, 1937.
Rails were the best gainers,
scoring gains ranging to 4 points
in Union Pacific. Santa Fe and
Illinois Central were both up more
than a point among active carrier
shares.
Bethlehem and U. S. Steel were
up a point and Crucible up more
than a point. Chrysler at its high
was up 2!4 points but profit-taking
scaled the gain. General Mo
tors rose nearly a point to a new
high. American Power & Light 6
preferred, up 3 to a new high, fea
tured utilities.

that. the fighting will not increase'

the road to Tokyo will be cheap.
Troops of the 4(h and 5th ma
rines the latter in combat as a
division for the first time
pushed their way inland in'an at
tempt to knock out the positions
from which enemy garrison
forces are pouring artillery and
mortar fire on the beachhead and
to take the Island's air fields.
