(Stocks Advance
For 7th Session
New York, Jan. 5 tlB Stocks
advanced today lor the sevemn
consecutive session and" the gen
eral average made a new high
since September 4, 1937.
Railroad issues resumed leader
ship both in volume and in gain.
Industrials barely exceeded tneir
closing price average and the
minor gain brought tne figure to
a new high since October 25, 1939.
The rail average was at its best
level since August 2b, 1937.
The rise continued to reflect
reinvestment demand that ordin
arily comes into the market at the
beginning of the year. Modest
amounts of profit taking here and
there indicated a growing caution
on the belief the marke had risen
a bit too fast and needed a diges
tion period.
Heaviest trading centered on
New York Central with Erie rail
road second and Delaware, Lack
awanna & Western, fourth. Arm
our came in third place. Then the
rails picked up again with Le
high Valley in fifth place. All the
issues in the top activity brackets
made new highs for more than a
year.
