, There have been heavier Single
attacks, but this latest 'assault is
remarkable for its sustained quali
ty and the wide area covered
over a perted of 36 hours. The use
of the word "raid" is a misnomer,
This Is in every sense a military
offensive, and from all accounts,
a profitably destructive one.
. A review of the targets Indi
cates the scope of the operations.
The field covered northern
Prance; Bremen, the most im
portant remaining German Nonth
sea port; Frankfurt and Mann-
. helm-Ludwigshafen in southwest
ern Germany; Augsburg, farther
south; Innsbruck, Austria, at the
northern end of the Brenner pass;
Sofia, capital of Bulgaria, and the
. Eleusia airfield near Athens.
From Bremen to Athens la. nearly
1,500 miles. . ...
.New .'Bases Use
This wide range, hitherto Im
practicable, has been made possi
ble by the establishment of long
range bomber bases in the Medi
terranean, notably .Italy. The im
portant fields around Foggia in
Italy are now apparently in full
'operation. This makes possible
a two-way squeeze -covering near
ly all targets of consequence in '
Germany aa well as Austria, De
side 'bringing any part of the
Balkans within convenient range.
Changing winter weather 'con
ditions and the need for regroup
ing air squadrons after raids
which are -necessarily expensive
in bombers and crews limit allied
ability to keep -up such an 'Of
fensive without interruption.
There is nevertheless every pros
pect that they will be continued
whenever conditions permit, and
in increasing rather than dimin
ishing force. .
Losses ere admittedly heavy,
such as the loss of 42 big British
bombers and 25 American in the
two main sweeps over Germany.
However, allied military authori
ties insist that the cost can be
borne and is not too high in rela
tion to the damage caused to the
enemy.
The attacks are bv nature stra
tegic and are intended to cripple I
me enemy's ability to. resist when
the invasion ot western Europe
and the Balkans comes. Their
full effect cannot be gauged now
but H is likely to become apparent

For many years Carlos has been
in -charge, of an army of feline
beauties who were listed on the
postoffice budget as "guardians"
and divided live pesos worth of
meat daily.
Theirs was the Job of running
down the hordes of rats and mice

floors into the mail rooms. 1
When Carlos was put in charge
of his "army," it was decided cats
were cheaper than new floors.
Something had to be done to com
bat the serious menace to letters
and packages.
The furry guardians were dis
persed systematically through the
air-mall room, parcel post, regis
tered letters and money order de
partments where hungry rats
might do the most damage.
The cats have done their job
well. Postmaster Luis Gonzalez
Marin admitted that in his direc
tive calling for - construction of
new flooring.
But, Marin said, the budget of
five pesos dally for meat was no
longer sufficient, what with rising
prices and the fact that the feline
j army had multiplied its ranks con
siderably since lt was inducted.
So, sometime early next year,
Carlos keeper of the cats will
have only his. humdrum Job of
postoffice janitor to occupy his
time. Whether or not the extra
day's salary he was receiving as
cat superintendent would be de
ducted from his paycheck was still
to ne decided.
Postmaster Marin intimated he
would continue to receive the
money as sort of a pension for
faithful services rendered.

m Play Tonight
Lava Bear road trips will start
tonight when they meet Redmond
on the Panthers' home floor in
the second of the four scheduled
season games.
Last Friday the Bears eked out
an 18-16 victory over the Redmond
club on the Bend court, but Coach
Claude Cook feels that this win
will have little bearing on to
night's game since last year Bend
was soundly trounced every game
on the Redmond floor.
This will be the final game be
fore the Bend boys travel to meet
MacHi, LaGrande and Pendleton,
the three power houses of eastern
Oregon, in a vacation series on
December 29, 30 and 31.
Use Same Lineup
The lineup will be the same as
that of the two previous games
with Rines, Woods, Moore, Hlg
glns, and Murphy. Others who
will probably see action are James
Rasmussen, Smith and Smead.
Because of the Christmas pro
gram tonight, Wirtz and Brogan
will not make the trip.
Dick Maudlin, promising varsi
ty freshman, will be out of action
the rest of the season due to a
broken bone m his foot.
Officials in tonight's game will
be Lt Bob Bemjian and Capt.
Fred Hohenhorst, experienced
men from tne mid-west, now sta
tloned at Camp Abbot
The Cubs will again meet the
B squad in preliminary but will
also be several men snort because
of the music program.
