aged Inscription was Ihe work of
Judge John II. Waldo, for whom
Waldo lake, west of Deer lake,
was named.
The weathered fragment of the
tree hearing the half century old
Inscription was brought Into The
liulletln office by W. N. Mortimer,
214 Woodland, who reported that
his step sons, 1)111 and John Myers,
found the lettered wood several
years ago.
The old Inscriptions recalls for
old timers the fact that John H.
Waldo was the son of a western
Oregon pioneer, Daniel Waldo, for
whom the Waldo hills of the Eu
gene country were named. "Judge
Waldo", states McArthur's "Ore
gon Geographic Names," "sought
his recreutlon In the Cascade
range, and Waldo glacier on the
southeast slope of Mt. Jefferson,
was ulso named for him." Judge
Waldo died September 2, 1907.
