HELDBY ELKS
Regulars Win 5 to 3 in
8-Inning Game
Several Players Expected
To Join Club in Next
Few Weeks
Out Our Way
By J. R. Williams
Bend' Oregon State league
Elks joined in their first real
workout of the 1941 season yes
terday, taking advantage of an af
ternoon of sunshine and mild
temperatures. The squad was di
vided into the regulars and the
yannigans, and the regulars won
5 to 3 in an eight inning game.
Despite the fine workout, the Elks
management was far from satis
fied with the squad, badly riddled
by the migration of former Elks
to try out in organized baseball.
Rend, It was evident after yes
terday's workout, will require sev
eral replacements before facing
Klamath Falls here on May 11 in
the opening game of the Oregon
State league.
In yesterday's practice game.
Hatch and Turpi n took turns on
the mound for the yannigans and
looked good in their early season
hurling against the regular bat
ters. Walker and Farmer pitched
against the reserves and were
equally efective. Walker, regular
centerftelder, has been doing
plenty of work on the mound in
practice and is showing to good
advantage.
Jack Gordon, last year's lead
ing third baseman, worked in the
shortstop berth yesterday, in the
absence of Bob Douglass, and
started scooping them up in the
same manner he finished the 1940
season. -
Manager Clyde Stokoe has an
nounced that the Elks nope to
secure several new players in the
next week or so.

Even a great orchestra will make a
musical mistake one in a while. And
onr in a while . . . out of the thousands
of decent, law-abiding beer retailers in
Oregon... you'll come across one or
two who operate disreputable estab
lishments. These "black sheep" retailers con
stitute a tiny minority. Yet they tend '
to drag down the good name of beer.
By arousing public indignation, such
undesirable retailers endanger your
right to enjoy good beer. They also en-
danger the benefits to the public that
beer has made possible.
For example, in Oregon beer has cre
ated 13.238 new job with an annual
payroll of $11,941,350 and paid
$617,020.86 in taxes lost year.
The brewing industry wants "black
sheep" retailers eliminated entirely. You
can help us by patronizing only the
reputable legal places where beer is
sold. And by reporting irregularities to
the duly constituted law enforcement
authorities.
