REA UNIT TALKED
Meeting Scheduled to Be
Held at Madras
Redmond. Jan. 21 Organiza
tion of a Jefferson county unit of
the Central Oregon REA project
Is now under consideration, and
will be discussed by interested
farmers at a meeting Saturday at
2 p. m. at the Jefferson county
courthouse in Madras, Clinton A.
Becraft, . superintendent of the
project, said here today.
The proposed addition. Becraft
said, would include most of the
agricultural land east of the Des
chutes river in Jefferson county,
with Oral springs as a starting
point for the lines and Gateway
as the northern end. All of the
territory included is land which
is slated lor Irrigation under the
North Unit project.
There is a possibility that the
Warm Springs district might en
ter the picture as an additional
market lor power from REA lines
which might be built into Jeffer

ever, the cooperative included
only Crook and Deschutes county
territory.
While the project now being
discussed in Jefferson county
would have a low number of mem
bers per mile of line, Becraft said
this number would be no lower
than in projects being built else
where, while the possible future
increase when the North Unit gets
into operation would be large.
The Jefferson county lines, Be
craft believes, would be much
cheaper to build than the lines
now being constructed in Des
chutes and Crook counties. If Jef
ferson county farmers complete
their membership sign-up and the
proposed extension is approved by
REA authorities. It is hoped that
the present construction contract
could be adjusted to include con
struction of the additional lines.
Homer-G. Johnson of Portland,
construction contractor for the
Central Electric cooperative, now
has construction well under way
on the 237 miles of line which are
being built to serve approximately
500 farmers in Deschutes and
Crook counties.
