"You see. 'black light Is just an
application; not an invention."
There was a huge need for such
a d.vice as "black light" in modern
aeronautics, especially since the ad
vent of blackouts. Until its inven
tion, airplane manufacturers had
uiacd a fluorescent radium mixture
on the dials which was often illegible
and laomelimc inflicted radium poi
soning on the pilots.
Even after "black light was con
ceived it was not practical, since it
operates on alternating current and
planes are powered with direct cur
rent. But Gars tang solved that prob
lem also with an extremely light
current inverter designed especially
for changing DC to AC for the black
light."
Each unit of "black light costs
about $130 for installation. Accord
ing to Gars tang, small planes require
from one to three units while larger
planes such as flying fortresses re
quire as many as six to 10 units.

The nine man team ran .100
