the forest fires In Montana. North
ern Idaho and Kaslern Washington,
forestry officials at the district head
quarters here announced today.
Many blazes are under control but
dense smoke clouds for hundreds of
miles prevented accurate observation
by air patrols.
Yesterday fighters succeeded in
throwing trenches along one side of
lite 17 mile blaze in the Kootenai
forest, north of I.lbby. Montana.
This blaie has already covered near
ly 20.000 acres and is the largest
for this district in five years
Despite unfavorable weather con
ditions, control Hues were expected
to be established today with several
hundred new men at work.
Weather conditions have caused
various forest supervisors to predict
that the coming week will be the

them to the place where the strang

Here they found the tracks of the
stranger's automobile, his tracks and
those of the little girl, correspond
ing exactly to her story. There was
no question but that the girl had
been taken thfljft just as she de
scribed. I'arlon concluded.
As to the stranger's departing
without molesting the girl, i'arlon
believes that he did n t see the men
working down in the quarry until lie
hud led the girl to a point at some
distance from the car: and that when i
he did see them, he threw her to the
ground end fled. The men In the
quarry did not see them.
The tracks of the same automo
bile, with tire treads corresponding
exactly, were found where the girl
said she was picked up.
