Isabelle Pop"' today went through the
hardest ordeal she saw her love af
fair with Billy Mcl'limork. the "mil
llondTa orphan;" paraded in public
in n crowded court room.
Isabelle was u witness for the
prosecution, seekini! to prove that
William 1). Shepherd murdered

Billy's fortune.
But It was under cross examina
tion by William Scott Stewart, chief
counsel for Shepherd's defense, that
Miss Pope was called upon to test
her serve. She identified love let
lers she hud written to Billy and
heard them read in public.
Stewart ended his cross examina
tion of Miss Pope by asking her if It
were not true she had entered into
an agreement with Billy s distant
heirs whereby if Billy's will is brok
en and Shepherd loses the bulk of
money, she would still be protected
financially.
"Yes. that's true," she replied.
She added that if the will was
broken she was to get half of the
estate instead of $8,000 a year as
provided by the will which Shepherd
drew up just before Billy died.
This. Stewart contends, is the rea
son that Miss Pope is testifying
against Shepherd.
When Siewarl finished his cross
examination, court was adjourned
until 2 p. m.. when Isabelle will be
questioned further by the state.
Miss Pope struck a bard blow at
Shepherd's defense a moment later
when she told that her cousin. Dud
ley Pope, and his fiancee had eaten
raw oysters on the same occasion
that Billy did two weeks before his
fatal illness was first noticed.
According to the defense theory.
Billy contracted typhoid fever as a
result of eating oysters.
"Now. Miss Pope." the prosecutor
asked, "did your cousin or his fian
cee get sick after eating those oys
ters?" "No." Isabelle replied.
"You and Billy and your cousin
and his fiancee were all together,
were you?"
"Yes. all four of us.'.'
"And all but you ate oysters?"
"Yes."
"And Billy was the only one that

"Yes, sir: that Is right."
This testimony, the prosecution
contends, destroys the defense theory
regarding oysters.
