McClintock failed to make headway

the defense this afternoon.
Again and again Shepherd's attor
ney proletited against tactics em
ployed by State's Attorney Robert B
Crbwe and on nearly every occasion
they were upheld by Judge Thoniaa
J. Lynch. The rulings prevented
witnesses from building up the chain
of circumstantial evidence by which
Crowe hoped to seud Shepherd to th
gallows.
So completely did the defense hav
Crowe stopped that Judge Harry 01
son. who expected to testify for a
week, was dismissed after answering
I few preliminary questions.
Kfforts to draw' the story of the
fatal "McClintock fortune" from Al
exander Reichmann, the next wit
ness. met with little more success.
New Home Forced
Finally, however. Crowe succeedeo
in getting Reichmann to tell part el
hia story. It dealt with his effort;
to provide a "good home" fo little
Hilly. Reichuiann was coguardian ol

with Mrs. Shepherd.
"I never could talk to Mrs. Shep
herd alone." Reichmann testified.
"Shepherd was always there with h"

"I tried unsuccessfully to get the
Shepherds to keep Billy quiet as he
wna a sickly child after his mothei
died, but they insisted upon draggiK
htm all over the country on pleasure
trips.
"After some effort. I forced them
into probate court and made them
provide a new home for Billy in the
suburbs, where he could get plentr
of fresh air. The money was provid
ed by the estate, which was in m
control."
At this point court adjourned fot
the day and the state announcer

ther tomorrow.
0M'tiing Statement Made
"This man Shepherd." Crowe de
clared in his opening statement,
"took advantage of his wife's friend
ship to Mrs. McClintock and at
tached himself to the McClintock
household.
"He did not work to earn a living,
but lived a live of ease, reading and
fishing. He did it off the McClin
tock fortune."
Crowe went over Shepherd's entire
history, seeking to show the jury
that Shepherd had lived in anticipa
tion of Inheriting the McClintock
$1,000,000 estate.
Shepherd and his wife followed
the widow McClintock and her five
year old son. Billy, to Texas. 16
years ago." Crowe rontlnued. "He
poisoned Mrs. McClintock' mind
against the attorney which her de
censed husband had appointed to
guard the estate. He wanted to get
the money in his own clutches."
IVath Story Told
Crowe then told of Mrs. McClin
tock' death. He made no charge
of murder against Shepherd for this
death, but told the jury thai Shep
herd was "dancing with glee' when
went on.
"This arrangement was not satis
factory to Shepherd. He didn't love
the boy. He did not want a son to
love and educate. He wanted the
money.
"After falling In other schemes,
he decided on one plait of action to
guard the money It Included murder-
the cold blooded murder of an
innocent boy."
This "plan of action." Crowe de
clared, "consisted of raising Billy to
the threshold of manhood and get
ting him to make a will." Then.
Crowe charged. Shepherd committed
the murder.
By a court rutins, oil slate's wit
negaai were ordered out of the court
room. There was a score of them,
including pretty Isabelle Pope. Billy's
I fiance, and Judge Harry , Olson.
Shepherd's nemesis.

these pioneer products of the Pacific
Seventy-five years ago the pioneer coffee and spice mill of the Pacific ('oast
was established in San Francisco by James A. Folger. It was a modest plant,
for in those days most housewives bought green coffee and roasted it them
selves. But James A. Folger was a far sighted pioneer. 1 le quickly sensed that
high quality coffee roasted evenly and uniformly in commercial quantities
.would have an instant appeal to the Western housewife. 1 le w as right.
The business expanded rapidly. It grew with the country. The plant at San
Francisco was constantly increased to meet the demand for Folger's products
from the Coast States. Then, in 1900, Folger's Coffee was introduced in the
Middle-West and South-West the first Pacific Coast Coffee to be sold East
of the Rockies.
So today in our Diamond Jubilee year it requires three complete plants and
thirty-two distributing stations to supply Folger's products to the retail trade
in 29 states.
On the .first package of Folger's roasted coffee was printed this slogan:
"Our Success is Dependent upon Quality." On such a foundation has the
Folger business grown to its Diamond Jubilee year. Quality has carried
through these seventy-five years and must always be in the product before it
