BUSINESS STREET PARKING
. After reading all that has been
said in the Portland papers tor the
past few months about automobile
parking an the business streets and
then observing the conditions exist
ing here In Bend one wonders if it
might not be a good plan to bring
about a change here. Of course, we
would hardly venture to suggest that
Portland conditions, with street
cars, scores of automobiles and hun
dreds of pedestrians, were duplicat
ed here. At the same time there are
points of similiarity that seem to
as to make It worth while to sug
gest the desirability, at least, of dis
cussing a possible change.
We are fortunate in having in our
business section streets of a good
width. Nevertheless, with cars park
ed on both sides there remains only
comparatively narrow course for
other cars to pass through. This nar-
Towness is the more noticeable and
dangerous when cars are backed out
from the curb to proceed on their
journey. One or two accidents have
occurred this summer because of this
condition. It Is remarkable that there
have not been more.
Another objection In connection
with cars closely lined up along the
curb Is in the inability of shoppers
to take their purchases directly from
the store to the conveyance. Store
keepers, we should suppose, would
much prefer to have the space in
front of their stores open for their
customers, than filled by the cars
of others.
We are not urging any arbitrary
opinion In the matter. We should
like, however, to have it discussed
Perhaps we are all wrong and every
body Is satisfied with the present
arrangement. What is the feeling in
respect to this parking?

SAYS CHURCHILL WANTED
To the Editor:
Readers of last night's Bulletin
are led to believe that my presence
at the school board meeting of Oct
ober 5 was for the purpose of beg
ging apology. My presence there was
in behalf of high school students who
had agreed to return to their studies
should the board agree to call State
Superintendent Churchill. The board
would not agree to this arrangement
In consequence a number of students
have decided to leave our schools
and attend elsewhere.

Farewell, Summer
When sizzling Summer pulls her freight, and
lets the Autumn in, my lyre hits up a better gait
inay'st hear the merry din. When Summer's getting
in her work, I spring a noble bluff, 'and, with an
optimistic smirk, I say that she's the stuff. Oh,
where, I ask, would be our wheat, and radishes and
beans, if summer didn't send the heat that ripens
all such greens? Oh, where would be the luscious
fruit, the pumpkins and the maize, if Summer's
sun refused to shoot its justly famous rays? lut
even as I deftly spring conundrums such as these,
I wish that Summer would take wing, and send an
early freeze. It is no treason now it's o'er, or fad
ing to its rest, to say that Summer is a bore, and
now and then a pest. I'm always glad when Sum
mer goes, and Autumn makes her bow, and hands
us hints of early snows to cool each fevered brow.
When sizzling Summer comes again, if I am still
on earth, I will point out to melting men her virtue
and her worth; and as I boost her varied charms,
I'll sigh, in accents drear, "I'd gladly give two up
land farms if Autumn days were here !"
