CORRECT THE STATEMENT
Not only American Legion,
but the industries of Bend, have
good reason to be indignant at the
unfavorable publicity Riven by the
report from the so-called Portland
investigator to the effect that Bend
stood third In the state in the em
ployment of 'aliens. Examination
Into the facts showed that the man
who made the charge did so with
out any study of the local situation.
So far as it appears he had not even
the excuse of an honest mistake. In
fact It is difficult to say what his
excuse can be.
Local industries are damaged by
such untrue statements because by
them the Impression is given cur
rency that they are not interested
in the development of Americanism.
The local American Legion post is
injured because it is made to appear
that it has no weight in community
affairs. Here in Bend both such
ideas are false and the fact that
the report was made with the sanc
tion of another legion post does not
in any way minimize or condone the
fault. In fact, it is difficult to un
derstand why another post, unau
thorized by any state convention,
should make such charges.
Out of fairness to Bend, its in
dustries and its legion post, the
truth of the alien employment situ
ation here should be given as wide
publicity by the Portland post as
was first given to the erroneous
statement.
Everybody who thought enough of
the day to wear green on the lTtb
ought to think enough of the need
to come through with a subscription
for the suffering Irish women and
children. It means more to wear a
receipt in your pocket than a sham
rock in your button hole.
Seven hundred and ninety-two
voters asked the council for an or
dinance and it was not passed until
an initiative petition was started.
One mayor asked for a franchise
and after the second reading the
rules were suspended and the meas
ure put through.

heaves a heartsick sigh, and for a week or maybe
three he'll drive with cautious eye. With earnest
care he will advance on streets where commerce
thrives and give pedestrians a chance to save their
misspent lives. Rut soon he'll weary of a pace
that's safe but deadly slow, and then again we'll
see him chase dispensing death and woe. And
though he's pinched by peelers bold, he still will
scoot and zip; when once the speed germ gets a
hold, it won't relax its grip.

Street Corner.
Mrs. G. A. Garske was run into
and knocked down by a car driven
by J. C. Mayer Saturday evening
about 7 o'clock on the corner of
Minnesota and Will streets. She was
not seriously hurt.
Mayer was driving slowly, having
circled completely around the "safe
ty first" sign on the corner before
striking Mrs. Garske, who was on
the crossing. Witnesses say the ac
cident was unavoidable on bis part.H

It was with great surprise I read
In your paper of the granting of a
franchise to Mayor Gilson, to supply
Bend with water. What guarantee
did Mr. Gilson make that he was act
ing in good faith and for the better-1
ment of Bend? He predicted much
good would result from the granting'
of the franchise, but failed to iayj
whether the good was for the people
or for Gilson et al. To a close ob
server it is a grand opportunity for,
few to benefit at the expense of
the dear people. Why not have '
Mayor Gilson initiative petition, and ,
then the people could decide. To my
