CHICAGO, Feb. 17. Nineteen-
year-old Mary Zundak, whose broken
mentality was mended by the trans
planting of a monkey's thyroid gland
In her neck, is marooned In a hos
pital here while physicians wait
for philanthropists to come to her
aid.
Mary's brain snapped when strick
en with infantile paralysis when she
was six months old, and for 18 years
Bhe lived in a basement of her par
ents' home at Joliet, III., where she
was discovered by health officers.
The girl could neither talk, read or
walk. The parents, foreigners, kept
her secluded because they thought
that the best way to protect her.
Since the operation, two months
ago, the girl has shown improvement
in mind and body and hospital au
thorities are now faced with the prob
lem of educating her.

Los Angeles Women Declare.
(Br United Pros to Th Bend Bulletin)
LOS ANGELES, Feb. 17. It looks
like "curtains" for the boldf bad
women of wax.
Authorities are pondering over a
request by a delegation of local wom
en moralists, who demand that wax
figures of women In display window
of downtown stores be dressed and
undressed behind drawn curtains.
Crowds of men, sometimes num
ber 200, say these women, gather and
watch while the garments are re
moven from the manniklns or wom-
anklns before they are tucked away
for the night.
Frequently, it Is charged, the mod
els are entirely denuded of gowns,
corsets well, everything.
Traffic often is blocked, the dele
gation added.
