SAD DAY COMING FOR
BASEBALL PITCHERS
Examplo of Italic Ruth May Hcsilt
In Production of Generation of
Sluggers From Youthful Teams.
' By Henry L. Farroll.
(United Press Star! Correspondent)
NEW YORK, Oct. 21. Beginning
with the year 1930, professional
baseball should hare a batting re
naissance. At Just about that time the unin
tentional tutoring of Babe Ruth will
begin to show its effect on the Amer
ican youtb. Kids now at the Im
pressionable age will be beginning
to break Into box scores of profes
sional baseball and the cards say that
a flock of pitchers will begin to yell
for a ball a trifle less lively. Own
ers of clubs, too, will favor legisla
tion to keep a flock of pellets from
leaving the grounds every day. Some
thing new in the way of batting
achievements will have to be invent
ed, probably, because home runs
should be as common then as ordi
nary hits are now.
The reason for this dip into proph
ecy naturally is that everywhere In
the land the 10-year-old kid Is imitat
ing Babe Ruth. They've got his
swing, Ills "stance" and even his
"waggle."
Just as a caddy develops into a
star, simply through conscious or un
conscious imitation of the star driv
ers and putters he serves, so are the
kids of today going to pick up some
of Babe's home run methods.
Of course Babe is unusually adapt
ed to heavy clouting, but it is gen
erally admitted that his swing and
"follow through" help a lot in gain
ing distance. No one is more apt in
acquiring the cunning of a star than
the 10-year-old boy.
Baseball players just starting their
career should avoid becoming pitch
ers. In just a few more years the
moundsmen will be getting their
bumps.
