INDIAN SIGNS
One of the curious and Interesting
things of this Central Oregon coun
try of which, we believe, no men
tion has ever been made is the sign,
or picture, writing to be found on
rock faces in various sections. ' Rel
ics of a distant past, what they all
mean or under what circumstances
they were drawn on the rocks Is a
mystery. To those, however, whose
minds travel back over the years
when the country was inhabited only
by Indians, they are sources of never
ending speculation and wonder.
Equally mystifying are the meth
ods used by the Indians in making
these drawings and the material em
ployed. As seen today they are of a
dull red color, faded somewhat, but
in most cases otherwise unaffected
by the action of the weather. The
messages they were tntended to tell
have long since been delivered, but
they remain to tell another story to a
different race.
Of the five different spots where
the picture writing is found, the
most accessible to Bend is Just off
the Tumalo road and near the town
of Tumalo. Here a single rock
shows pictures apparently intended
to represent a man, the sun and a
horse. On the rock slide that bord
ers the newly opened road between
Sparks and Devil's lakes there are as
many as seven different sets of pic
tures, and on the trail from Tumalo
creek to Tumalo lake there is a
stone with two characters on it.
More . extensive and elaborate
drawings than any of these are
found, we are told, on a large rock
on the old Prineville road from the
Millican valley, and on rocks in a
canyon on the east side of Tumalo
creek, three or four miles from town.
Possibly there are others of which
someone will now tell us and possib
ly there is still someone here who
can say what the signs mean. We
trust this may be so.
Whether or not we learn what the
signs mean, sentiment for their pres
ervation should be developed. Van
dals have marked over them in some
places and there is always a possi
bility that they will be destroyed,
which would be most unfortunate,
for whatever is of interest in our out
of door country should be zealously
preserved.

To The Dentist
To the dentist I am wending at the early hour
of day, when the vising sun is lending glory to the
stacks of hav; for a session elevating all arrange
ments have been made, and the painless dentist's
waiting, with his crowbar and his spade. Oh, my
ringbones long have smarted, and my spavins hurt
my calves; for such things, in days departed, I
used liniments and salves; but my teeth are at the
bottom of such miseries as these, and the same old
teeth, dod rot 'em, make existence seem a cheese.
Once I had a temper cheerful, and my home was
full of peace, and you heard no wailings tearful
from my wife or aunt or niece ; but for months I've
been as nasty as a bear with festered dome, and I
said things blanky-blasty when I had to write a
pome. Oh, a shadow o'er me hovered, and it
changed my wine to gall, and the doctor has dis
covered that my teeth produced it all. Of all uticas
the pentest is the one that spoils our glee, so I'm
going to the dentist, and the dentist waits for me.
In his apron new and stainless he is waiting at his
door, he is standing, tall and painless, and his smile
is five by four; he is singing like a linnet, waiting
there to cut his ice, and he'll charge a bone a min
ute, but the goods are worth the price.

Why Frankfurt.
King Carl the Great (Charlemagne)
was once defeated by the Saxons, and
fled with bis Franks to the Main. But
they tfould find no fording place by
which to escape the pursuit of their
enemies. Suddenly a cart appeared
and mnde for a spot where It crossed
easily, thus showing the Franks
where the river was fordable. So
they came across the Moln. and 'he
place has, ever since been culled

TOKIO, Sept. 21. In order that
she may take a commanding place in
athletic events in the Orient, par
ticularly the Oriental Olympic sports,
Tokio is building a vast athletic
park and stadium at a cost of more
than a million yen. The track will
be larger than the Olympic track in
Stockholm and great care has been
exercised in-'the planning thereof,
this being in charge of experts who
were sent to Eurppe to study the best
features of tracks there. The trackB
will include one of 400 yards and
another of 200 yards, but the origi
nal plan to include a baseball dia
mond was abandoned, it being com
mon opinion that the two features
cannot be successfully combined.
On the west Bide of tha field will
be an inclined grassy slope which
will be able to accommodate 40,000
spectators, while on the east side will
be a grandstand with seats for 15,000
spectators. Inside this stand will
be dressing and bath rooms, dining
halls, and even dormitories for vis
iting teams. Work on leveling the
grounds has already begun, and it is
expected that the entire structure
will be completed by 1923.
