The report of Fire Chief Tom Car Ion showed five small fires in the city last month, and a population Increase of six during the same period was given in the report of Dr. (X.A. Fow ler, city physician. There were 13 births and seven deaths during the month. The council appropriated $250 to defray the expenses of Mr. Carlon when he attends the Fire Chiefs' con vention In Los Angeles., Weed Riddance Asked. The need of cleaning the river of weedy growths was brought up by the fire chief and his plea was sec onded by the city physician. City Engineer Gould stated that the weeds could probably be killed by the use of chlorine and the matter was referred to the health commit tee, the fire chief and the engineer. Chairman Rhodes of the streets committee reported on the almost impassable condition of Wall street and was authorized to make tempor ary repairs. Appearing for the Bend school) board, H. E. Nordeen asked for side-j walks on Newport between Sixth and Eighth to connect with the Kenwood building. His request was referred to the streets committee with rec ommendation for immediate action. An ordinance requiring certifi cates of health for all persons en gaged in the handling of food for public consumption was read for the first time. It was drafted at the instance of Mrs. E. Stock well and the city physician and is intended to con stitute a safeguard against the spread of tuberculosis and social diseases. Bills Ordered Paid.
