While for somo years the loor health of Emperor Vo Bhlblta has boon the subject of seri ous concern lo his subjects, ' ami while It has ofton been rumored that he was far more seriously ill than proved to bo the case, it is evident that duriuR recent weeks his condi tion has become fairly serious. Recently rumors have had it that tho emperor had died. . Such reports guln credence owing to the fact that in Japan tho death of an illustrious person is often concealed for many days. One of the first Indications that matters were becoming serious was the announcement that the Lady Aiko Yangabara Niino Tsubone, the emperor's mother, has goue to the great shrine at Ise to pray for lils Vealth. One daring newspaper even stated that the emperor was suffer ing from brain trouble, as has been quite generally reported, but this pa per was very soon visited by the po BUILDING PROGRAM AT U. OF O. RUSHED Fourth New Structure Started on Campus and Will Ik Completed Early la the Coming Year. EUGENE, Sept. 1. The fourth new building to be erected on the campus of the University of Oregon this year has been started and is ex pected to be completed early next year. The new building will be the home of the new university model high school and the school of educa tion. It is located on the Gale tract, j recently purchased by the university, and is located about four blocks from the administration building. Rapid progress is being made on the other buildings under construc tion on the campus. The woman's building is the nearest to completion, practically all the outside work hav ing been completed.' This memorial structure, which was made possible largely through gifts and donations by the women of the state, will house most of the activities of the women of the university. ' , A large gymnasium forms the cen ter part of the building, with ample locker facilities below. In the west wing there is a swimming pool in the basement, while the two upper sto ries will be composed of class rooms and offices. In the east wing, rooms for alumni and visitors to the campus will be located. Work on the npper structure of fhe second units of the women's dormi tory has already been started, and it is planned lo have this building com pleted as soon as possible in order to accommodate the increased enroll ment of women expected next year. Work on the new commerce building is also being rushed. The completion of the present building program of the university will bring the total of buildings lo cated on the campus at Eugene to 23. In tho meantime tho emperor re turned to Toklo from the country, with the expectation of going to Nlk ko nt the end of July, as ho gen erally spends the summer at his vil la there. The fact that ho was not able to carry out tho program was ! probably what led to tho nnnounce ' ment being made by the imperial household to the effect that tho em perpr "has been" seriously ill. but . is now recovering. It adds that ho I is suffering from glucorla, "hip gout," norvous trouble and dlfflcul i ty of speech. While tho official an nouncement speaks hopefully of his improvement and probably, speedy recovery, it is quite generally be lieved thnt his illness has taken n serious turn, and the worst news would come as no surprise to the thinking elements.
