BRING BACK THE DEER With the hunting season opening tomorrow, scores of men ire hasten ing to the woods and lakes with the nope of returning in a few Says with venison. Some will be successful, manr will be disappointed, for it is only too true that the deer ate no longer found on the eastern slopes of the Cascades in the numbers that were here only a few years ago. Twelve or 15 years back, accord ing to early residents, deer were fre quently seen within a few miles of the present city limits. On the H'gh Desert deer and antelope flourished before the homestead invasion that came with the railroad. In the nine ties, we have been told, there were hundreds and thousands of big mule deer all over the whole country. Now they are all gone. The chief cause of the disappear ance of the deer Is undoubtedly the '. wholesale slaughter that took place -before we had any game protection. At that time a deer was not wild game, but merely the means of get ting a hide. Indians from the reser vations killed hundreds for their bides alone and the - white settler, coming after the Indian, has taken 'his toll,- for the fact is that respect for the law and protection of our game has been sadly lacking for years. The result is the . present scarcity. The deer will never return in the numbers that once were here. They have passed with the long bunch grass and the stage coach and the freighter. And yet they can be somewhat restored if the cougars and wolves that prey on them at all times and the poachers who disre gard the law can- be done away with. One is a job for government agencies and the other for the public. Will not the sportsmen who are successful and those who fail in their hunt take steps to help bring the deer back? RippliriRhijmiQS Vslt Mason The Loafers I ply my lyre the whole day long, and have since long ago, and ship out bales of deathless song at fifty cents a throw. And if I faltered in my zeal, the sheriff would appear, and promptly place his large red seal on all my worldly gear. And when my harp gets smoking hot, its cooling system clogged, to some calm park or kindred spot I often times have jogged ; and there the loafers always sit on benches, day by day; they do not toil, they do not knit, they never strive for pay. I see the same old musty groups by day, and after dark; barred out from all the city's coops, their home is in the park. They seem to think there's nothing wrong, they burble and they laugh, until some peeler comes along and prods them with his staff. How doth the seedy little shirk still find existence nice, when men who buckle down and work can barely raise the price? How doth the boozy little bum contrive to stay on earth, when we must toil and make things hum, to gain our board and berth ? - It is a mystery, I wot, that needs solution, much ; and when my air cooled harp gets hot, I muse, to beat the Dutch. fulfillment of the, contract nt the original prlco Impossible. Groat. (United Praaa Staff Correspondent) BERLIN, Aug. 31. The German "Kallsyndikat" the syndicate, un der" government direction, supervis ing Germany's vast potash business has been trying dictatorial meth ods on American business people. The result is .that American busi ness is practically saying to the Kal lsyndikat, "Go' hang; we'll develop most of our own potash." And American potash buyers are suiting their actions to their words. Consequently,' the outlook at present is that the American market will not absorb more than 110,000,000 to $15,000,000 worth of Germiin pot ash a year as against five to ten times as much were the syndicate In a conciliatory mood. The clash between American con sumers and German producers .dates back to the period Just before the Kapp coup. The American buyers had contracted for a vast quantity of potash understood to be around $40,000,000 worth. Then came Kapp and upset industry and the government. Subsequently, the work ers in the potash fields held that they . wanted more money, making Two Heads Are Better Than One CONSULT your wife when you decide to have your house wired women spend a lot of their time in the home and they know what is necessary.
