FOOD OR FROCKS Asked the other day by a Bend merchant what we believed to be the biggest manufacturing and retail business in the country, we guessed "The tobacco business." "Wrong," be said, "the biggest Is jewelry, the next, phonographs and records and the next, automobiles." Wo wondered if right there were not the biggest reasons for high prices, and then we came upon a dis cussion of a recent article by Roger .W. Babson, in which Just that point was made. Mr. Babson's article was entitled "Food or Frocks." The discussion reads as follows: "There is much food for thought in the facts to which Mr. Babson calls attention. 'It is estimated, he says that last year the American people spent over $22,000,000,000 on non essentials. If millions of men are engaged in producing materials for making luxuries, or In manufactur ing or selling luxuries of any kind, they have not time to devote to rais ing foodstuffs and making the essen tials of life.' "According to Babson, seven eights of the selling effort today is directed to getting people to buy lux uries, and it is plain that until peo ple stop buying luxuries, and there by release the materials and labor that are going into them, there will not be enough of the necessities of J life produced so that they can be sold at more moderate prices. "But an even more deplorable fact is that most people are becoming lazy and careless as well as extrava gant. Consumption is not only in creasing, but production is falling, off. Production per man has fal len is industry by 20 to 40 per cent. "There are, of course, many other factors that enter into the solution of these pressing problems of the cost of living, but It seems to us that a consideration of the facts men tioned must lead every right-thinking person, who wants to discbarge his obligation to society and to aid in the solution of Its problems, to re alize that he must stop buying lux uries and increase his output. "If just half the people who are complaining about the cost of living would practice as well as preach this doctrine, this bugaboo of the high cost of living would quickly disap pear." Tree's a graft that men call toil, and some men are said to work, one as tiller of the soil, one as blacksmith, one as clerk ; I have heard of honest sweat, but I know not what it is; play is here the only bet, and the autos round me whiz. I have heard of girls who stitch through the weary sweatshop day, but I'm with the idle rich, and such things seem far away. Is there trouble anywhere? Are there cupboards bare and lean? Here one thing is causing care it's the dearth of gasoline. Oh, I loaf upon the beach, when the night rack's rolling brown, and evicted tenants screech, doubtless, in some burning town. And I see the fogs ascend, hiding crags and tors and cairns; and some far-off mothers bend over sick and wailing bairns. Is there sorrow on the sea? Such things don't, you understand, come within a mile of me. For I'm one who has the price, and I watch the seabirds reel, drinking near beer off the ice, eating pie at every meal. HUNTING THE SPERM WHALE One Taken Off West Coast of Scotland Realized Five Thousand Dollars for Its Captors. A graphic account of the hunting and killing of a sperm whale Is told by one who took part In It. Starting from the west coast of Scotland the whaler made for Rockall, a lonely granite pinnacle that juts out of the Atlantic about two hundred miles west of the Outer Hebrides. Why the whales go there is a mystery, but In early summer schools o( them may be found In the neighborhood. The look out soon spies a "blow," that Is the fountain ejected by the whnie ns It comes to the surface to breathe. Away goes the whaler In pursuit After some tense maneuvering the whaler gets Into suitable position, the skipper takes aim, fires his harpoon gun and a harpoon is embedded In the mon' Brer's body. The whale disappears taking yards of hemp line with mm. Presently be rises to blow attain, and Immediately a second harpoon Is fired at hi 111 and lie goes down with yards of cable rattling overboard. About fifty minutes Inter he floats on ' the surface of the water, quite dead. ' Immediately the sailors fall upon him. Air is pumped Into the carcass to make It buoyant, his flukes are trimmed off, so Hint lie will float in tow, and the whuler makes for Scot land again, wltb a host' of screaming birds In her renr. This particular whale realised five thousand dollars. It was a full-grown sperm, about sixty feet long. Leading Question. "My wife Is practicing with dumb bells," proudly exclaimed a would-be athlete. "Do you find them any softer than the flntlrons?" queried a wag who reraeard the remark.
