U, Nordvon, chairman ot tho building committee of the Ilup tiitt church, announced laxt niKht, An application is being put in to the Oregon IlaptlHl convention for a sum to be not lens than $12,000, the balance of the total to be ralHcd locally. The building will be put up on tho present church alio, at Irving and Oregon. At prenent the committee Is en deavoring to sell the building which was gutted by flro last winter. As soon as tbo framo structure Is haul ed away, excavation work will begin. The two rea rooms, Mr. Nordeon ex plains, will be left for church pur pones until tho construction of the front partof tho new building has been completed. Then the rear rooms will be tuen from tbo Bite, and replaced with the same type of permanent construction as Is adopted for tho part already erected. This, Mr. Nordeen states, will nocossarlly bo fireproof, as tho site Is within the city lire limits. It has not yot been definitely decided, howover, whether brick or stone will bo used. Whatever the ma terial, the exterior will be almost soverely plain, with every effort made to provide an attractive In terior. TEACHER SHORTAGE FACED IN COUNTY Both Rural and City Schools May ne Handicapped by Lurk of Instructors' Kor Grades. Doth Deschutes county and the city of Bond are facing a shortage of grade, teachers, according to statements given out this morning by County Superintendent J. Alton Thompson and City Superintendent S. W. Moore. The salary limit fixed for grade Instructors during their first year Is proving a handicap in the city, Mr. Moore says, while fail ure ot rural districts to act prompt ly when a large number of appli cants was available, has resulted In a largo percentage ot withdrawals of applications, Mr. Thompson re ported this morning. Although the building was con demned last year, the use of the lower floor was permitted after a number of changes had been made In the building on the recommenda tion of the state fire marshal's of fice. Shamrock IV was 600 yeards ahead of the Reaolute when the British and American yachts entered in the in ternational cup races finished the first 10 miles of their 30 mile course here today. The Shamrock's lead la time elapsed was three minutes ani 35 seconds.. The Shamrock led the Resolute) around the second mark in the race for America's yachting cup. The Resolute was coming up fast. A fresh breeze sprung up from the south west, making It practically certain that the race would be finished be fore the time limit at 6:15 o'clock. Vntunal Missile Pierces Aa Artery 'n Boy's Arm. - While oiling a saw in the Shevlls Hixon box factory yesterday after noon, Wilbur Watklns, factory em ploye, sustained an injury involving a slight loss ot blood, when tho saw ripped off the Bpout of the can, and hurled it with sufficient fore to penetrate an artery in the boy's left arm. The spout was removed and the wound dressed at the Lum bermen's hospital, where it was re ported that no serious developments are probable. GAS THIEVES WORK , DURING CARNIVAL Motor Fuel Drained from Parked Cars Seven Gallons Stolen from Fire Chief's Auto. Many autoists whose cars were parked about the carnival grounds last night, found that their tanks Tiad been drained during their ab sence, gaaoline thieves taking tho opportunity to replenish their scanty stocks. City officials were not ex empt, and Fire Chief Tom Carlon noted with disgust this morning; that some person or persons had drained his tank dry, taking seven gallons from the machine while it stood In the garage. REID PRINCIPAL QUITS POSITION School Board Receives Resignation of Mrs. Veronica Cane Cole ' man No Cause Given. Resignation ot Mrs. Veronica, Coleman from the princlpalship ot the Reld school, held by her for two years previous to her man-lag early this summer, was received this morning at school board head quarters.
