When anybody tolls you that the sugar ..trust la cornorlng America's sawdust murkot. to soil the sugar that is contained in trees, don't be lieve them. It cau't be done. There is sugar thero, but not the Bugar maker's kind of sugar, so the saw dust factories will not be able to help pile up new fortunes for the Bogar makers. . The nation was startled the other day by a scientist's ( announcement that there is an enormous amount of sugar in sawdust. A chance for the housewife to preserve fruit by saw dust sugar seemed to be in the realm of possibility. But the bubble has been pricked by the cold-blooded scientists of the New York State College of Forestry here. ' Here is what Dr.- Louis E. Wise, one of Uncle Sam's war time qhem tsts, now professor of forest chemist ry at the New York State College of Forestry, says about sawdust sugar: "An important sugar can be pre pared from sawdust with hydrolysis with acid, but it must not be con tused with the sugar of the break last table. This sugar, prepared from wood, is dextrose or glucose and is identical with tho sugar ob tained by acid treatment of starch. The sugar is not identical, however, with Bucrose, commonly termed 'cane sugar' or 'beet sugar.' Glucose is. however, widely used commercially,, and is an important foodstuff. It is the principal component of corn sy rups and the like, and has distinct nutritive value." DE LAHUERTA NOW MOVES INTO CASTLE CARRANZA SHUNNED (Continued from Page 1.) voluptuous pictures after the style of a Pompeiian villa, and the grounds were terraced. Most of the pictures are gone today. . ' There still remain, however, the favorite boudoir of the Empress Car lotta, its walls adorned in pink satin brocade; the dining salon, finished in beautifully carved Alsatian oak. with panels of GobVlin tapestries; the ambassadorial department, pink and gold in Louis XV style; and count less other furnishings which still re tain their excellence, including the mahogany bed in which Ellhu Root rested his closely cropped head when on a mission to the old Diaz govern ment. ..... Construction of the castle was be gun in 1783,-bot did not reach its present state until many years after ward. Today it covers almost the whole top of Chapultepec, which, in the 'Aztec .language, means Grass hopper hill, so called from the' num ber of insects that once Infested the region. Under the Carranza regime visitors inspected thercastle upon ob taining special permits. It Is -still open to visitors, but, being the presi dent's residence, permits are more difficult to obtain, and the hours of inspection' more limited. THAT SOUND IN THE NIGHT , torms- Nothing So Very Terrible, but at Least, Henry Found Out Just What Causad It ' It certainly was a strange sound even though nt midnight all sown) are strange. Mrs. Meektou nudged her IuisIhuhI hard. "Henry," she whispered, loudly, "wake up at once, mid go downstairs! It sounds like burglars!" "Yes, my dear," replied lloury, nervously. "Uut 1 don't " "if you dmi't go nt once." stated his better half, "I will go myself!" "I shall certainly go, Maria." Henry said with dignity; then he added, "if I hear It ugaln." "No, go now," ordered Maria, "or 1 shall shriek for the police, and tell them that you made no attempt to capture the thieves!" "Very well," replied Henry, through trembling Hps; "but let me kiss you and the baby before I go, and when he grows up tell him that his bruve daddy jumped out of bed oue bitter night and holdly attacked several armed burglars and fought with tlieiu till he was overpowered and" "O-o-o-oh, Henry, there It Is again! Go at once!" yelled Maria, giving him a mighty push. And Henry went downstairs, trem bling violently. Cautiously opening the kitchen door he turned on the elec tric light and found the kitten ploy ing with baby's ludlu-rubher bull. One of the many experiments of the Royal Drawing society has been to teach people to draw by touch. The pupil Is blindfolded and feels a simple shape, like a hammer ,of a spade, and draws It with his eye open. An ad vanced pupil has drawn the head of a classical bust and the mask of Bee thoven. These experiments fired Mr. C B. Ablett. the director of the society, with the Idea of drawing by the blind. He has devised a medium which looks like the frosted stuff on a matchbox made liquid, by which the draughtsman can follow by touch what he has drawn and correct or add to his work. So far there have been no experiments with a blind pupil. ' Mr. Ablett does not claim for it more than that a blind man can draw the plan or a design of something be wishes to record and explain. A blind gardener has been known to go Into ecstasies over the unfolding shapes of a plant, and the drawing of these shapes, known to him by touch Would undoubtedly give him a form of es thetic pleasure. In any case. It would Increase his means of communicating with the outside world. A great boon. If the method Is prac ticable, would be that It would enable the blind to write end to read writ ing.
