ments would be, and what results in
the way of farming could be expect
ed. In Central Oregon the con
struction engineer, the Irrigation
bond buyer and the prospective set
tler can visit 700 farms in Deschutes
county, farmed for a number of
years by actual, practical farmers,
where he can see demonstrated all
that he needs to know regarding the
irrigation of the lands of the new
project.
Pnxslbilitit-s Great.
During the past year Hie Central
Oregon Irrigation company delivered
water to about 32,000 acres of land,
22.000 of which were" in cultivation.
The value of the crops produced on
this land, as shown in the company's
report. Is $1,368,977. The value of
thene lands has been placed at $3,
307.431. Pretty good for land that
once raised principally sage brush,
junipers nnd Jackrabbits. The other

local projects, such as the Tumalo.
on which some 7900 acres were
farmed; the Squaw Creek, on which
some 8100 acres were cultivated,
and numerous smaller projects pro
duced in like proportion, and give
evidence of the possibilities and value
of Irrigated land in Central Oregon.
New Home Made
The irrigation of tbe Benbam Falls
segregation, the North Canal unit
and the enlarged West Side unit
would make available something in
excess of 100,000 acres of irrigable
land, or as much again as is now
farmed in Deschutes county. The
estimate given of the lands which
can be irrigated in tbe entire larger
Deschutes project, includirg the
North unit in Jefferson county, has
been placed at well over 200,000
acres in the Deschutes report. The
value of the agricultural products of
those lands in Crook and Deschutes
counties which would be irrigated if
the project is constructed, would be
somewheres in the neighborhood of
three times that produced in Des
chutes county at the present time.
which would add materially to the
wealth, resources and business of the
towns and of the county. The new
lands would also furnifh homes for
well over a thousand new farmers,
while at the present time there are
about 750 in the county.' '
The figures given in regard to the
size and extent of the proposed irri
gation projects are only rough esti
mates and are not given as being la
any way correct, although, tor the
sake of conservatism, they are placed
considerably under the engineers'
estimates. However, they may suf
fice to indicate what may be expected
if Central Oregon receives the herit
age to which she' is entitled, which ia
the Irrigation of our arid lands and
the full development of our natural
resources.
