ILL TIMED CRITICISM
Because Tuesday sight's fire car?
ried off a number of buildings and
resulted In a heavy property damage,
a few people are Inclined to criticise
the Bend volunteer fire department
and say that, on the biggest job it
has yet had, it failed. We say that
the contrary is true and that, on the '
biggest job the department has had,
It made a splendid success by keep
ing the fire confined to practically
one block. From, the moment of it
outbreak the fire was beyond the
control of any department in it
original confines. From the nature
of the building and of the neighbor
ing structures it was inevitable that
the fire spread. That it was stop
ped where it was reflects the great
est credit on the Bend firemen.
It is easy to criticise. People on
the side lines with nothing else to
do see one thing or another that they
may find fault with. The absolutely
perfect team work that they look for
1s often lacking, but team work such
as that shown on Tuesday night is
not to be sneered at, and when we
realise that it has been gained by the
voluntary sacrifice of time, and leis
ure, by hard work and a real devo
tion to an ideal of duty and esprit de
corps, we should have only praise for
the men who shared in it at the risk
of their lives.

Tijuana
.In Mexico, across the line, Tijuana merchants
sell you wine, or any kind of sudden cteath with
which you like to paint your breath. And dead
game sports go there to drink their favored brands
of purple ink, and cough up seven bits' a throw for
little drinks of liquid woe. And when they've
toured through sundry bars they climb 'into their
motor cars, and throw on all the motor's power,
and hit a hundred miles an hour; and oftentimes
they break their necks and leave their costly autos
wrecks; and, failing this, some moral cop stands
in the road and bids them stop, and leads them to
the nearest jail, and then a jurist takes their kale.
Oh, gents who mourn our freedom lost, and say
the dry law is a frost, cease shedding tears anil '
journey down to old Tijuana, freedom's town!
There you may drink a peck of gin, and no cheap
sleuth will run you in, and though you wade in
beer and rye, no magistrate will bat 411 eye. And
when you've had your poisoned drink, come back
and tell us what you think of this punk, tyrant
ridden land, where all the bugjuice graft is banned.

Not Always Warned by Instinct
Many persons are under the Impres
sion thnt the Instinct of animal
warns them nptlnst entlng or drinking
anything injiirinus. This niny tie the
case with wild beasts, but It certainly
is not true with domestic anlmnls. A
chicken will drink piiint. and cows
have been known to poison themselves
by draughts (mm a pool In which high
ly poisonous nitrate of sotla had been
steeped Give a canary liempiieed In
quantities and It will verv goon kill
itself.
On the other hand, there are poisons
quickly fatnl to man which have com
paratively little e.Tect upon a lower
form of nnlninl life.
Dogs and horses can take ten tlmos
as much morphine In comparison to
their bodv weight as man can. The
dove or plceon can take WKl times as
much, while the froaals unhurt by a
dose 1.000 times greater, weight for

Cyclone's Awful Destruction.
The tropical cyclone Is a real cy
