IN GREAT UPROAR (Continued from Page 1.) eridge, who was presiding ' while Lodge was at luncheon, was com pelled to intercede. Wheeler smiled when order wns restored, and his display of hearty good sportsmanship won him a hearty round of applause. His speech was an obvious disappoint ment to the California delegation. Tho speaker's voice weakened and he was frequently forced to moisten his lips and throat with water. The result was restlessness, and a buzz of ymversation swept over the ball. There were cheers when Wheeler mentioned that he was nearing the end of his speech and more hoots und jeers when he declared that "the time has come to drive the bosses I from the temple of republicanism." Tho nomination speech concluded at 1:16 o'clock. The California dele gation leaped to its feet and Btarted a procession. It was obvious before It had been on for five minutes that the enthusiasm of the loyal Califor nia delegation could not atone for the deadly effect created, but at 1 : 40 the demonstration was still on, al though, like the others, the out bursts were largely mechanical. Dur ing the speech the great surprise was. the apathy of the galleries. Blind Speuker WeU Received. Delegates visited various parts of the hall, read newspapers and vis ited. Lodge hammered the conveti' tion to order at 1:44 o'clock, the demonstration having lasted for 28 minutes. Representative Shall of Minnesota, blind congressman, was led to the platform by his 8-year-old son and started the first Johnson seconding speech. He had the crowd with him from tbe minute he started speaking anH was received with rounds of aplause. The fourth sowonding speech was made by Mrs. Catherine Edison ot California. Speaker Gillett of the house nomi nated Governor Calvin Coolidge of Masachusetts and received only po lite applause. The Massachusetts delegation gave three cheers when he had finished, but there was no attempt at a demonstration. - . Marion Butler nominated Judge Pritchard of North Carolina and Og den Mills placed the name of Nich olas Murray Butler before the convention. Dance With The American Legion.
