FIGHT FANS FORESEE
BITTER RING BATTLE
Speck Woods May Prove Jlnlch
for Hard-HiMinfC Portland ld.
Say Bond Boy's Backer.
Despite the generalship and ell
around fighting ability displayed by
Ted Hoke, of Portland, in his re
cent battle here with Frankie War
ren. a strong contingent of local fans
is backing Speck Woods, of Bend, to
beat the Portlander in their 10
round main event here Monday night
at the Hippodrome. , The fact that
they will fight at catch weights will
give Woods some seven pounds the
advantage of his hard hitting adver
sary, while it is generally admitted
that Woods will be much stronger
than . inj Bis combat with Weldon
Wing, when he was weakened by
training off real muscle in order to
make weight. The long rivalry ex
isting between the two since the time
they were both in the ring in Bend,
has never been definitely settled, and
fight enthusiasts are looking forward
to a finish scrap.
' Kid Taylor, fighting at 12 pounds
in the second preliminary, will meet
one of the best Portland boys of his
weight in Billy Ryan. The bout is
scheduled for . eight rounds, and. the
kid will have the task of his voung
life when he endeavors to overcome
the advantage which several years
of experience have given the visitor.
For the first .preliminary, Albion
Christiansen and George Rowe. both
of Bend, will four three, minute
rounds at catch weights.
Held Whisker Sacred.
If the beard has any standing in the
world today, it Is undoubtedly because
of the Jews, who held their whiskers
to be sacred, and swore by them.
Later, the Turks did the same. The
sultan's followers used to comb their
whiskers after prayers, catch the
hairs that came out, break them In
two and bury them, on the theory
that in some mysterious way the hnirs
helped to make soft walking to the
gates of paradise. This the Turks
firmly believed.

Fine Steels form the Sinews of a
MAXWELL
Everything that id built to en
dure must have fine sinews.
A great ship, a giant locomo
tive, a huge bridge, a gigantic
building.
Search for the sinews in a
Maxwell and you discover new
steels, fine steels, special steels,
steels manufactured to Maxwell's
own formulae.
Steels, for instance, that make
possible that rare combination
of extreme lightness and brute
strength.
For a Maxwell is made to
be light in weight. Its mission
is economic transportation.
Any superfluous pound to
carry around means so much
more cost of operation.
But the great problem was to
get steels of rare quality and
great strength.
They are found in a Maxwell
in axles, shaftings, gears, frame,
crankshaft, connecting rods,
etc., etc.
They equal, pound for pound,
the steels to be found in any
car made.
Costly as they are, they repay
their price many times over in
the lifetime of a Maxwell.
They save. They pay divi
dends of satisfaction.
They make friends. They are
responsible for that rapid rise
of Maxwell the world-over.
Nearly 400,000 now in use;
100,000 more in process of
construction; and fully '40 per
cent of those who have de
cided upon a Maxwell as their
first-choice car will hot be able
to get one this year so over
whelming is the demand for
this remarkable car;
Pioneer Garage
customers. The Smoad Dairy.
