Along about this time of year there are being held all over New England those annual gatherings well known to all students of muni cipal government as the New Eng land town meetings. In each town the voters congregate at the town ball, a chairman, known as the mod erator, is chosen and the annual bus iness is transacted, including the vot ing of taxes, discussion of town af fairs and the election of selectmen and other officers. We have no intention of proceed ing ith a discussion of this town meeting form of government, nor of comparing it with the other forms in use in other parts of the country but we do want to call attention to the fact that in all these towns one of the officers elected is the tree war den to whom is entrusted the care of all trees on the public streets and highways. His job includes not only the care of these trees but also their protection against disfigurement or destruction in connection with street improvement, work or the work of those public utility corporations that use the city streets. If work that involves a tree in any way is to be undertaken the tree warden Is con sulted and his permit obtained. Look ing at the work from the view-point of one interested in the tree he is frequently able to suggest changes or modifications of plan that mean saving'it, or if it must be trimmed or .cut in some way he will see that the'least possible-damage is done. Frequently in the past the matter of protecting our trees has been dis cussed. Mr. Strahorn. on one of his visits here, made an especial plea to the Commercial club to take steps for their protection. The subject has more than once been discussed in The Bulletin. A few months ago another local newspaper took up the cause. No results have yet been ob tained from any of this agitation, however, and it occurs to us that tfie reason is because there is no one of ficial responsible for the work. What is everybody's business in business. Our Commercial club com mittees either will not act or are ap pointed too late to get results. There Is no civic body sufficiently Interest ed to care for the trees all the time and the tres get no protection. Why not create the office of tree warden in the city of Bend and have our trees cared for and protected? Authors' Art A lot of authors kill our laughs, and bore all gentle readers, by finishing their paragraphs with foolish strings of leaders It's spoiled a lot of books for me, this silly affectation, and when a "leadered" page I see I'm filled with indig nation They say that Walpole books are great, they boost his "Secret City"; but me they chafe and irritate, inspiring this punk pit.ty. His sentences all disappear in leaders running tan dem ; and if I had some stale eggs near, to Walpole I would hand 'em O'er books I never am enthused, however apt their phrases, if in them fly-speck lines are used, when words are cheap as blazes I do not think the writer fine (I grieve to make confession) who has to use a dotted line to help out an impression The strata gems of writing hicks oft make me shrink and shiver; no author need resort to tricks, who can the goods deliver nf Viini li. ii rt or n pnrri-l nr Imul, must nlsu shmv any cuius ivnll.i'il ,y tlu, suit1.
