From the: present apptyirance of our down town streets it seems clear that they must . be hard surfaced next spring or a lot of money wasted tn temporary repairs. In fair condi tion early last fall they gave pro mise, when the suggestion ot hard surfacing was first made, of being sufficient for another year. Since then, however, the bumps caused by carrying water pipes across the street and the chuck holes developed when water collected in the single tracks broken out after the December storm have made the streets almost as rough as they were before the cindering in the spring of 191 S. With costs as high as they are at present some property owners na turally shrink from the expense in volved in laying hard surface. This is especially true of those whose pro perty is occupied under leases that were written at a low rent and have still some time to run. The expense seems Justified, however, when the alternative of temporary repairs is considered, and the fact that such re pairs cannot make the streets much better than they now are. Store keepers especially, whose show win dows suffer from the dust of an un paved street look for a saving, and it is probable that the cost of street sprinkling can be reduced. In some ways Bend is a hustling, thriving little city and in others a provincial town. Hard 'surface pave ment on our business streets will give us a start out of the provincial class. Having been unsolicited the testi monial.from the county Farm Bureau for the weekly edition of The Bul letin, reported in yesterday's daily edition, is especially gratifying. With its weekly for the country and the daily edition for the city The Bulletin covers the field. Ripp.irigRhqmGS - I V iae. I" Walt Mason Fooled Again. They said this good old world would end, De cember seventeen ; and fireworks of all kinds would" lend their grandeur to the scene. I'd have to see this best of globes dissolve beneath my feet, yet I put on ascension robes with resignation sweet. "If, with the balance of the race I have to loop the loops, I'll do it with a smiling face," I said, to frightened groups. Resigned to seeing things explode, or pass in living fire, gave away my chaste 'abode, my corkscrew and my lyre. I threw away my cherished pipe, a box of good cigars; "because," 1 said, "the time is ripe for me to climb the stars. I won't have use for worldly things, I'll care not for long" green, when I have donned my shining wings, December seventeen." The fatal morning came at last, and found me in my room; the skies with clouds were overcast, as though with threat of doom. All day I waited for the crash of planets overturned, and passed up smokes and missed my hash, and for the climax yearned. I'm trying to regain the junk I lightly gave away; once more my fingers go ker plunk upon the harp all day. My faith in prophets, once so" strong, is in the soup tureen, since I was bilked with all that throng, December seventeen. I iiIiik. Tree That Rotates. A cross section of a great old spruce tree from Alaska tells (he story of a tree which executed a spin, like a ballet-dancer. This cross section shows a most peculiar structure, which has caused a great deal of speculation among the various foresters through out the country, and a very Interesting explanation is advanced in American Forestry. It is known that a tree grown at a slant forms on the lower side of the trunk a dense reddish wood known or "rotholz." This spiral in this case is of such sort, and as It is a continu ous formation, winding from the cen ter to within half an Inch from the circumference, It is surmised that It was growing in an inclined position on the edge of a glacier, where by some shifting It was caused lo rotate, so that all sides of the tree were success ively on the downward side. Thus, as the tree grew, and Its rotation contin ued slowly, the "rotholz" developed Into a spiral. Seaweed Scenes. With a needle and human hair pic tures have been produced on silk and Ivory which have amazed the art crit ics. This fact is recalled by a catalogue of freak pictures which has lately been published. Landscapes, sea scapes, portraits, and natural history pictures have been produced with ex traordinary skill. Needlework and beadwork pictures are fairly common, and shell, seaweed, and feather pictures were also very popular at one time. Seaweed pic tures dale hack to 1780, when "an un known lady" exhibited three land scapes In oil, "the trees and shrubs be ing made In seaweed a new inven tion," to quote the catalogue. Pictures cut In paper were also fre quently exhibited, while on one occn-. slon a Indy exhibited a festoon of flow ers cut In cork. . Optimistic Thought.
