Co. said several of the potato exhibits would take aIirst prize in any collection he had ever judged, and he had judged potatoes all over the United States and Can ada There is ji statement from an ex pert that means much to the farmers of Central Oregon. If they can raise potatoes of tlits quality their future is assured, for despite the fluctallous In price to which the potato is sub ject, there is always a market for the best and at a good price. That this is so is shown by the ex perience of the Deschutes Valley Po tato Growers' Association which. In the past few years., by holding rigid ly to a high standard, has netted Its members an average price well above that obtained by the non member who sold his potatoes him self In potato growing in- this valley the surface of accomplishment is as yet hardly scratched. There can bo produced here a potato both for ta ble use and for seed that is unexcell ed in the northwest. By making one variety the standard and then mak ing that variety known everywhere as the Deschutes valley potato, there can be developed a business of trem endous importance. The work has been begun already. Every farmer owes it to himself to join the Potato growers association and help carry it on. He will benefit and so will the community. No wonder Marshal Foch takes pleasure In recalling I.azure Hoche to his countrymen, t'f Hoche it Is said that he once proudly wrote to the minister for wnr of his day, "Je suls la patrle." The French of the present century would throw tip their hats at such a sentiment as en thusiastically as the contemporaries of Hoche and Ituuget de Lisle. With the great mass of them, though they do not perhaps express It so tersely. Koch Is "la patrle" in the senie that he cer tainly stands for them as "la VIctoire" personified. An Interesting suggestion has been made by a prominent Swiss meteorol ogist and physicist. M. tie Quervuln of Zurich, to the effc t that the vast stores of munitions collected in the bel ligerent countries during the hist four ytnrs be utilized to advance the cause of science instead of being merely fir ed oiT to make a Uoman holiday, or else sunk In deep waters to avoid the latent dangers which reside III them.
