I The host work Is done by the lazy people who want to get through uml rest. The Industrious, active body, busy R n bee, and always nt It, Is very li able to become a puttercr. Murk Twain culled attention to the fact that the ant, to whom the gage recommended the tdugKiird to go, anemia nmxt of his energy tn running around like a drunken Indian. ' The great humorist hated to move; he used to give the boy In the print ing office a nickel to sweep around him, so that he would not have to take his feet off the tnhle. At seventy he confessed that "all exercise Is loath some." Laziness is not good In Itself; but when Joined to conscientiousness and sense of responsibility, as It often It, It Is the very bust worker. The world's work Is done by those who do not like It. Nine persons out of ten would quit what they are do ing If they could. At the very beginning of Arnold Bennett's novel, "Hilda Lessways," la a luminous bit of philosophy: "Hilda hated domestic work, and because she hated It she often did it passionately and thoroughly." Mark Twain hated to write. Dr. Frank Crane, in Farm Life. R. L. ANDERSON Real Estate Insurance Loans Minnesota Street Phone; Office. Black 1591 Residence. 2051 J. B. Anderson. Agent. This year of grace 1019 Is rich In centenaries. Tn begin with, It Is a hundred years since Queen Victoria av peured on Mother Karth a centenary concerning which the monthlies will presently be waxing eloquent, London Tit-lllts states. Another noted centenary of the present year Is that of I he famous old en-dog. Admiral Hodney, the man In whom for years the French found so persistent nil assailant, so doughty nn adversary. 'Twas way hack tn 1S10 that this old gentleman llrst delighted his friends with his presence. The centenary of V. E. Foster, the stutos innn. will nlso W celebrated this year. Few greater authorities on education than this gifted son-in-law of the great Doctor Arnold of ltugby ever breathed. Among other worthies whose names must nlso be mentioned In this con nection Is that of John Campbell Sharp, the Wordsworthinn poet and philosopher; Arthur Hugh Clougli, the poet, and Charles Kingsley, the gifted author of that Immortal thriller, "Westward Ho!" Scotsmen will presently be doing honor to the memory of another noted individual whose centenary nlso falls this year a man worthy of a happier fate Donald Cargill, the great cov enanter, who, it will be remembered, for daring to excommunicate the king, was executed nt the Old Market Cross, Edinburgh. Neither must we forget George Eliot, the nuthoress of that unparalleled romance, "Adam Bede." GOT THE WRONG IMPRESSION Grandfather Was Convinced His Pet Had Joined the Church, and Re joiced Accordingly. I She Is a newspaper woman and her ' grandfather formerly was a local prearher of circuit fame. He is very much Interested In her religious state and worries because she does not at tend church every Sunday night. The other evening she wept to a ! church to write a story about the new ! organ, the purchase of which hail been made possible by her stories in the pa per. So she took grandfather with her, knowing that while he could not hear niiK'b of the services, still he would en joy being in the church. At the close of the sermon came a surprNe for the newspaper woman. The minister announced : "Miss S., who wrote the stories which brought the money for our organ, is with us to night and I would like for her to come tip In front so that all of us may see her and shake her hand." Grandfather saw bis grandchild ad vance to the front of the chureh nnd nlso saw the people begin slinking her hand. He had not heard a word the minister had said, but still he bad the memory of camp meeting days to In form him of what was happening. They convinced him that bis grand daughter had Joined the church and with handshaking the people were welcoming her into the fold. So hn diil bis part. He rose to his feet and began shouting at the top of his voice. Indianapolis News, i Log 20,000 Years Ola i Not so long ago a workman. 81 feet ! below the surface of l'.roadway. near Pine street, In New York city, found ia piece of ced:!r wooil that certainly ' presented a remarkable discovery. The wood was uncovered In excavating for I tbe foundation of a big nflice building. It was a part of the trunk of a large cedar tree that grew nt least lO.'KIO years ago. and more probably 20,000 years ago! The wood was within a foot' of bed rock, anil it was covered with SO feet of bowlder clay and glacial drift, which showed that the tree from which It rame mut have flourished before the last great age of Ice. i m . i m WWW 1 a Rut? There Is always danger, when any one concentrates, that the eonecntrn tlon will be carried too far so far that It produces a narrow, one-sided and wurped point of view. The, great scientist, the great scholar, tho great thinker In any Hue Is usually not an all-around "good fellow." "Crabbed," "uueer." "peculiar," "odd," "funny" and "warped" are these not the. W Jectlvos that generally describe the geniuses of the world? Tho very ef fort to concentrate on the one sub ject which has brought success has made It impossible to keep In touch with tho thousnnd-aml-one currents of thought nnd topics of conversation which go to make up comfortable and easy going life, l.lke the old sea cap tain, these geniuses miss something In their effort to tlx their uttentlou on one thing. In spite of this danger. It is a good thing to work for concentration. Tho likelihood of becoming ou-sldcd is big where genius Is concerned, tint then It can be excused. Most of us can safely concentrate our attention and still feel sure that wo will keep In touch with the world about us. Marine Fireflies. The bay of Toyama, Japan, Is the itcene of a peculiar phenomenon that occur each year In April ami May. The cause of it Is ;tn almost limitless swarm of cuttletish that shine like glowworms. The fish are tiny, says a writer In the Boston Transcript, and when they meet with anything objectionable they emit a wonderful display of phos phorescence. Every spring the coasts of Toyam.i swarm with these little creatures, ami fishermen go out with special nets to catch them. When caught In the meshes the fish emit their light and cnuse the nets to sparkle as If charged with electricity. The people regnrd the sight as won derful, and rush In great excitement to see It.
