CASHMAN, BEND'S : BIGGEST : AND : BEST : CLOTHIER Snow Houses in the Arctic A snow house is the most adaptable of dwellings. If It pets too warm ei ther for the comfort of the inhabi tants or because the roof begins to thaw, you con lower the temperature by enlarging the ventilating hole with your knife. If it pets too cold you make the hole smaller by stuffing a mitten into it. If the roof begins to thaw because it Is made of blocks that are too thick you send a man out with a long knife or machete, and he thins them down until the frost without neutralizes the heat from within and the thawing stops. But If you have made your roof too thin and hoar frost begins to form from your breath and from the steam that rises from the rooking, then a man goes out with a shovel instead of a kvffe and throws a little soft snow on the roof to blank et it from the excessive cold. OIL CRANK-PINS OF AUTO ENGINE Chief Reason Why Bearings Wear Fast is 1 hat They Are Not Lubricated Properly. GOOD SYSTEM IS DESCRIBED Hat Given Excellent Results and Elim inated Most of Connecting-Rod Bearing Trouble Study In. terlor of Engine. ' The adjustment of the connecting rod bearings Is one of the most coin ; mon repair Jobs on an automobile en ! glne. Probably the chief reason why these bearings wear faster than the others Is that they are not lubricated properly under ull conditions. Tho system described below has given very good results and has almost elimi nated connecting-rod bearing trouble. Most of the oil delivered to tho main bearings escapes the ends slid (lows along the crank webs, and Is finally thrown off by centrifugal force. If small scuppers are placed at the ends of the crunk-plns this oil will be caught and nitty be carried through the pin to the beuring. In the right-hand Illustration one throw of the crunk-shaft is-shown with the scupper In place. . The oil leads are indicated by dotted lines. Tie radial hole should be drilled first, and should extend to the renter of the pin. Then a hole should be drilled through the renter of the pin until 11 Connectlng-Rod Bearing Adjustment is One of the Most Common Yet Com plicated Jobs About the Automo bile Engine. It connects with the radial holp. The amnllest drilh; possible should be used; probably an ',4-ln. radial hole and a 310-ln, lead will work out best in the average engine. In very large engines a slightly larger hole would probably give Letter results. In a case where the crank-pins nrc hollow, the scupper placed over each end nnd over the rndiul hole Is all that will be necessary. The other Illustration shows n de sign for a scupper that Is well adapted THE UNITED WAREHOUSE COMPANY WHOLESALE. DIFFICULTY IN WASHING CAR Operation Can Be Performed by Man Working Alona If Barrel Is Placed on Platform. The great difficulty In washing au tomobiles, where no water under pres sure Is available. Is to operate the sprayer pump, and at the same time use a sponge effectively, says Popular Mechanics Magazine. , A large water nnd air-tight barrel with both hotuls In tact will be required. A faucet or valve, to which a hose can be attach ed, Is Inserted In one of these heads. The barrel Is then placed, with tho faucet down, upon some sort of plat form. A hose Is attached to this fnu cet anil to the nozzle of the force pump. After the valve Is opened, wa ter should he pnmped into the barrel, until It Is about three-fourths full. The Water From a Well or Clctern Is Used With All the Convenience of a City Pressure System. valve Is then closed, and the hose Is removed from the nozzle of tin- force pump. To use the barrel as n force spray, it Is only necessary to put n nozzle on the hose and open the valve at the bottom of the barrel... The air, which Is compressed by pumping the water Into the barrel, forces the wa ter out when the valve Is onened, thus making an effective spray.. All these operations enn be performed by a man working alone. CLA55iriEDl if A V7 f m JL HELP WANTED, eaitU for wonta or li, Olm rtnl lt m-il (or H uvir VU.
