The Chevrolet leads in the automobile sales in the state of California for the month of May. Of all electrically equipped automobiles registered in the Golden Gate state 1020 were Chevrolets, the nearest competitor being 709, registered. For the first five months of 1919 the Chevrolet led all sales. CAN THERE BE MORE CONVINCING PROOF OF Chevrolet Popularity Won Entirely on Merit. Mechanical excellence and economy of operation are reasons why CHEV ROLET is the chosen car of 500,000 satisfied owners. Oakland Sensible Six Powerful, sturdy and economical in performance, the Oakland Sensible Six, America's lowest-priced six-cylinder car, affords a most remarkable value. That, in part, accounts for the, popularity which this car enjoys among careful buyers, and its proven worth makes it increasingly popular with motorists who desire a dependable motor car. In considering the nuullflcutloriH to Im udded to these Keneral require- omuls, In order lo define; uppllcutoiiH lo tho mcchiinlcul conditions of cylin der lubrication, It Is neccsHury to con sldor tlm ijih-hi Ioiih involved In the operation of uh Internal combustion eiiKlno which uro different thuti those of uny other type. Whut I nay now mny. appear very elometury from n mechanical Htund poliit, but unless It is mentioned the Important bearing which It has upon lubricutlon will not be uh obvious an I want to make It. After a churge Iiuh been tuken Into the cylinder on the suction stroke, It is compressed to from KO lo 75 pounds before b- Iiik fired. Naturally upon the start ing of the compression Htroke there Ih u tendency for llm gasoline to leak. There ure two wuyH of obvl alliiK this difficulty of Hecuflug com pression. These two ways might be stated uh mechanically secured com pression. Ii is formed by the close fit between the piston or piston rings and cylinder wull; or compression se cured by lliiuld seul, which means the use of un eusy clearance between the piston rliiKH uml the cyllnderal wall und the m uling of this spuce between them by the uno of a proper kind of lubrlculing oil. In respect lo the mechanically se cured compression the following points ure worth notln.g as axioms which must be taken Into consid eration In estimating the conditions. 1. The closer the fit that Is, the less clearance between the piston and cylinder wall the more the power absorbed in turning the engine over. In fuct It Ih possible to secure per fect compression In this way only by securing so tight a nt that the mechanism will not turn. Even in practice good 'compression can be secured only at the cost of some of the power. 2. The closer the mechanical fit between the piston and the cylinder walls, the less must be the lubricat ing oil which will work Its way be tween them. The thinner the lubri cating oil, the greater will be the wear and tear bemuse of the Im possibility of keeping the surfaces apart where the clcurance Is so small and the lubricant such a thin film. With these conditions, when wear and tear are once begun, every stroke of the engine increases the loss of compression, the consumption of lub ricating oil, tho consumption of gaso llno In proportion to the amount of power, und In fuct decreases con tinuully the efficiency of the motor. Vou will readily see tho Impossibil ity of securing und maintaining mux I m urn efficiency under these condi tions. Tho motor, ufter leaving the ifnetory, Is run under greut varia tions of speed und load. Tlieso varia tions are (ulto rapid and frequent. On account of the mechanical con dition of the motor you have recom mended a very thin, light, lubricating oil for tlio motor under the guarantee that tho oil has no particular ud heslveueKX and will flow as readily from the cylinder wall as to It. Con sequently during the rapid and fre quent variation of speed, the cylinder 'walls are sometimes overburdened (with lubricant und sometimes dry. (To He Continued.) SUCCESS OF RURAL ROUTES Important Factors Which Must Be Given Consideration in Motor Transportation. (Prepared by the t.'nite fltnte Depart ment of AKrU-ulture.) There nre four Important factors which must be given consideration by the beginner In the field of rural mo tor trunsMrtatlon. These four fac tors are: (1) The volume of farm pr'jductH produced along the contem plated route; (2) the volume of mis cellaneous huiillng which could be se cured to supplement regular loads; (.3) competition from other carriers which would be encountered ; (4) the charac ter of the highways over which -the trucks must run. It may safely be suld that the features mentioned above will ultimately determine the success or fullure of any rural route. APPLYING ANTI-SKID CHAINS Work Must Be Performed So as to Avoid Clinking of Loose Chains Against Fender. Anti-skid chains must not be applied tightly to the tires, as so many car owners do to eliminate the clinking of be loose chain against the fender. Tight chains cut the tire badly. Fur ther, the chains should be Inspected at frequent Intervals and any cross links that have become worn or have de veloped sharpness should be replaced. It must be remembered that two of the principal advantages of the motor truck, namely, lessened handling of goods In transit and speedier transfer, are lost If satisfactory collection and delivery arrangement are not perfected. GAS SHORTAGE SURE TO COME Ill'VKIlS ARK CAUTIONKIJ OV NKKI) FOK HTKIf.T KCOXOMV (Alt MAXlFACTl'RKIW AUK ftlVl.VU TIIKIR AID. Today much thought is given to the gasolino problem. Automobile manufacturers as well as the oil pro ducers and refiners realize that a shortage of gasolino will come unless new fields are discovered. In the meantime they recommend that the strictest economy be practiced In tho use of gasoline and other petroleum products. The automotive engineers as well as the oil producers and refiners realize the seriousness of the gaso line problem and they are constantly bending every effort to devise auto mobile engines and methods of car burlzation which will secure the op eration of automobiles on grades of gasoline that will permit the maxi mum of production of this motor fuel from each barrel of crude oil, and which, at the same time, will give the greatest power and mileage from each unit of gasoline consumed. All this attention to the problem is helping to a marked degree, yet consumption is Increasing much faster than production. The gasoline of today is not as highly volatile as the gasoline of some years ago, yet It Is more power ful and gives greater mileage. Its use is made possible by the improve ments in automobile engines and methods of carbarizatioa. To go to the gasoline of ten years ago would be to accept a more highly volatile but less powerful gasoline, giving; less mileage. It would also result In decreasing the production of gasoline. Protect the Milk Snake. The milk snake, instead of stealing the farmer's milk, makes constant war Upon rats who unnuully coat the coun try millions of dollars In the destruc tion of cereals. They like to live un der barns and porches, and can follow through a rat bole where a ferret couldn't go. and eat the young rata. They eat meadow mice and field mice also.
