MONDAY. APRIL 21, 1919.
SELFISH.
In a quarrel between husband and
wife, according to the general un
derstanding, it a third person steps
in to take the side of either, both
turn on him and, forgetting their
personal differences, together give
him a good thrashing. In the pres
ent Strahorn railroad situation the
Portland Oregonian is venturing Into
the position of the intervening third
person, which has caused us to re
call a few thinigs about Portland it
self and its treatment of various
. projects which were thought to be
prejudicial to Portland interests.
How, for example, has Portland
in the past treated the efforts of As.
toria to gain the standing and recog
nition to which its maritime position
entitle it? Has Portland helped
Astoria to become a seaport in com
petition with Portland? Or has
Portland tried to block progress that
threatened local interests?
Portland has large and important
flour milling interests. Ocean go
ing vessels can come to Portland and
load the flour from her mills, or the
wheat from her elevators, brought
from the interior by rail. This is
. valuable business for the city, and
built entirely on the railroad rate
structure. When Astoria wanted a
common point rate on wheat. In
order that the commodity might be
brought to it by rail and then
shipped on ocean steamers, which
would thereby be saved thetime of
the trip up the Willamette, Portland
fought, and for years was successful
in preventing Astoria from getting
what she wanted.
Was this unselfish on the part of
Portland or was she looking out for
the Interests of her local industries?
Was it unselfish on the part of
Portland to fight the Willamette
valley saw mills who wanted a
freight rate on their lumber like
that which Portland enjoyed? Here
again what considerations moved
Portland opinion, selfishness or the
spirl. of progress that the Oregonian
charges Bend with lacking?
What has Portland tried to do
with Seattle's Alaskan trade? How
did the Portland merchants view it
when a shipyard company started
. a store for its employes? We seem
to remember a gentle protest from
the Oregonian for the benefit of its
advertisers.
How has Portland treated the
Strahorn road?
Has it offered one penny of finan-

cial assistance, although one of the
chief reasons for the road was the
opportunity it would iglve Klamath
and Lake counties to . bring their
trade to Portland Instead of going
to Sau Francisco?
What does the editor of the Ore
gonian know about Central Oregon
anyway? What part of it has he
ever seen? What do the moneyed
men of Portland, who have been
counted on to help Mr. Strahorn,
know about Central Oregon?
Recently we called attention to an
error on the part of the Oregonian in
mentioning Absalom. When it turns
to the Bible to find just what did
happen to that youth we suggest
that it continue into the New Testa
ment and ponder what is said about
the mote and the beam.
We are all selfish, the Oregonian
and Portland as much as Bend and
its mill companies. The Portland
selfishness seems to be a little more
extreme than any other because it is
rather more Intense and is more fre
quently brought to our attention.
So long as it exists in its present
form it hardly lies in the mouth of
the Oregonian to criticize the selfish
ness of others.
