Yesterday's vote by the Commer cial club, telling the state of Oregon that it is not im favor of the construc tion of the Strahorn railroad, will , undoubtedly be received with amaze ment. Hitherto, the state has under stood indeed, taken for granted that Bend would be one of the chief beneficiaries from the construction of the road and was heart and soul in favor of it. In a way, the project was born in Bend, Mr. Strahorn first announced his plans here and an en thusiastic reception was given them, later the town voted $35,000 in bonds' to buy terminal property, the prop erty was bought, is still held by the city and interest is being paid oa the bonds, and the Commercial club has been active in securing right of way for the lines. In the face of all this, we say, the news that the Com mercial club does not favor the con struction of the road will be received with amazement. The answer, of course. Is quite clear. The Commercial club, faced with the alternatives of supporting a project which is not certainly sure to be of benefit and which might in juriously affect the saw mills on which the town's present prosperity is built, or of refusing to support in order to avoid doing anything that might injure the mills, has proceeded on the theory that a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. In other words, it is made clear again that the business Interests of Bend, as represented by the Commercial club,, recognize what the mills mean to the town and will do nothing which may jeopardize them. The position of the mills,' as so frankly stated by Mr. KeVes yester-, day, Is purely a selfish one, but It cannot be said that there was any altruism in the Commercial club's action, as least so far as its unfavor able vote was influenced by a feeling that local business prosperity would be affected by conditions affecting the mills. It would have been equally selfish, on the part 'of the club, to have voted in favor of the road because It would increase pros perity, although injuring the mills. The unfortunate phases 'of the af fair are that the town, and the Com mercial club, should have gone so far In support of the project In the past if always underlying it were these possibilities of injury to local industries, and the fact that yester day's refusal of support was without Complete Line of Spaulding Sporting Goods at. The First National Bank OF BEND WE BANK OX YOIT, YOU BANK WITH U8 i any qualification. The Commercial club would favor the project it it thought the mills would not be in jured and it has been stated that in a few years, two or three, or at the most four, the possibility of in jury would be past. The club, then. might have opposed the Immediate construction of the road but recorded itself as in favor when the proper time arrived. Or it might have favored the east and west line, which is not objected to by the mill com panies, opposing the line to Klamath Falls until later. As things now stand, however, the club is on record as unqualifiedly opposed to the whole Strahorn proj ect, and this, we fear, may bring unjust and unfortunate criticism both of the mills and the town. We trust that we may be found wrong. The Bulletin takes pride in the fact that every one of its 12 employes has subscribed for a Victory loan bond. In highly con densed form It presents a vivid pic ture of the story's opening scenes. Toby Watkins is the sort of coun try boy, brave, humorous and thor oughly human, that all Charles Ray's admirers like to see him portray. It is the sort of character that has made the Ray pictures sure-fire offerings from the exhibitor's point of view. But Toby Watkins is no ordinary boy. He is Imaginative and some what dreamy, and every night when his day's- work is done he tgoes to his room and takes out a book that he has bought by mall, "What Every Young Poet Ought to Know." For Toby is ambitious to be a writer. The scenes of the story change to a country newspaper office where Toby goes In search of opportunity. This part of the story Is developed with realism and charm by the author, Julien Josephson, who was formerly a country editor himself, and who writes of that life with delightful sympathy. It is stated that Ray's handling of the role of Toby Watkins will rank as one of the best screen por- THE MOST DANGEROUS OF ALL DISEASES No orgimg of the human body sr ao Important to liealtb and long life as the kidneys.
