I nacdod clothes bndly. I had spont nil' above my board, room, Inunilry and cigar money for Liber ty bonds, Rod Cross, thrift stamps, V. M. C. A Salvation Army, K. C and wlmt not for the Inst two yonrs, all if which I was Rind to gWo and wouTfl liavo given mora. Wlfo had put patches whore placos wnra worn out. The tall ot my shirt wju wall up to my waist bund, It had igonn to make patchos for wholoi In moro conspicuous placaB. I noticed tho tho buttons on my coat woro not all the sumo. The knoos ot my trousors wore wall worn and bagigy. The collar blinds of my shirts woro sbparated from the matorlal. My shirt cuffs wera Irasslcd, my hat was sollod and dirty. . Wlfo HilKKONts Clothe. Friend wife saw me leave the vhouno on this particular morning and she caught the lapels of my coat. '"John," she said, "don't you think It about tlmo that you wore gutting some now dudsf You will not have to dig down so oftan now Unit the war Is ovor, and hulp out as wo did lust year. -Oct somo now clothes." Coming from wlfo, I took the tip. I had noticed that I did not have tho doHlro to gp out evenings bocnuse my clothos woro not ns snappy as thoy usod to bo. I know that tho pair of shoos that I wns wearing had been hnlf-solfld ut least three tlmos and that the eylots woro half gone. War does make a man ovor, was my thought. , All that day I thought about new clothos. In' the evening I wont out to lopk at huts. I found one without difficulty, There .were Stetsons, Gordons, Knoxos. They all . wero snappy. I will not tell you Just what I purohusod, but In one of the local stores I found my fancy suited. At that I thought "away with this old suit," so I looked over Michael Stearns, Hart, Bohaffner A Marx and Adlor Brothers and a few others. Modosty .forbids that I toll you what t purchased, but the price was not as high as I had expected. Then came the shirts. I looked at 25 partorns. Strnngo wlmt odd and funclful com binations thoy put Into shirts those days. Mother's crazy quilt had not one thing on these shirt piAterns. But thoy wore vory fine and so rea sonable. Then a tie or two. Whore do thoy got the ItloaB? Every conceivable color and combination. I wonder If the silk manufacturers ever get In toxicated on colors. Oh, yes! I got a. half dozon collars. I thought I would try all the latest stylos. Accessories) NtxewHHry. I never wbb vory strong for silk socks, but I thought I would init iate myself Into the realm and did. By this time I found kale running a little short, but I did need a pair of shoes. Shoes are vory difficult for me to buy on account ot one bad foot. However, the careful fitting whloh I received ' eliminated any trouble from this source. With bundles like Santa Claus, I mad my way home. It was then about five o'clock. Here, I thought, was a chunco to give friend wife a treat when she came home. So I alinved and put on one new dud after anothor. Golly, but It did seem good to get Into somo real fitting togs again. Strnngo too, how different n man looks, even to himseir, when he puts on now clothes, VN I never reveal any of my fnmlly affairs to strangers, but friend wife was effusive, to say the lonst. I saw she was happy to have me dressed up again, so that njght we went to the movies and later to a dnnce. I think we will get out a little more ofton this year for tonioorow I am going to send friend wife on a slml--lnr expedition if It takes the Inst cent we hove. DRESSES NO CHEAPER of business may be. . The 44 hour labor propsition will tend to keep the prices where they are, It Is argued. One manufacturer in speaking of the situation said jthat with "the reduc tlon in the hours of labor It wouhl difference or shortage of 800 hours a year for each employe In his factory which will naturally Increase the cost pf production regardless of any re vision in cotton, silk or wool prices. One manufacturer stated that the amount of material that goes Into a dress with existing fashions, was of llttlo consequence and really had but very little to do with Us price. The high cost of labor is the factor that tends to ' keep prices up to a much greater extent flian any other, and from the present outlook the chances of a reduction In labor are very remote. ' While fabrlo prices tend down ward rather than upward, it is said that dresses will be no. cheaper, even If materials are. Labor is tha big problem that confronts every manu facturer, no matter ruhat his line FARMERS WANT IMPROVED THINGS Some significant things were un covered by the United 8tates depart ment ot agriculture- a- taw years ago when it sent letters of Inquiry to 55,000 farm homes. The department asked what the farmers and their families mostly desired. Thousands of replies indicated that these people were in the market, or might be at a later time for many' things farmers ore not supposed to want. Among these articles were electric motors for running sewing and washing machines, modern plumbing, porcelean bath tubs, fur naces andother kinds of heatlno- an. paratuses, hot water heaters, tar. bage burners, oil stoves, coffee per colators, patont mops, porch cur tains, pneumatic cleaners, wheeled trays, automatic pistols, electric Inn terns, home pasteurising outfits, better home lire protection, asbes tos and composition shingles, and other prepared roofing, better barn equipment, lawn mowers and rollers, garden hose, flower seeds, clothing of better quality and style, knock down clothes closets and so on Indefinitely.
