C. II. Fox, IS Years in I'. S. Navy, to
Uo In t'hurgo of Knlistnient
Hero for Next Year.
RYE IS GROWING
WELL AT MILLICAN
To take enlistments for the V. S.
Jiuvy, C. H. Fox, rated us chief water
tender, with a record of 13 years In
the service, arrived In Bend today
mid will remain here for the Jiext
year as recruiting officer for this
district. Only four-year enlistments
will be taken, tout applicants having
the proper qualifications may enter
any branch of the navy. Mr. Fox
states. He will make his headquar
ters in the office of Mayor J. A.
Eastes, in the Deschutes Investment
Co. building.
The establishment of a recruiting
office in Bend is made necessary by
reason of the policy of augmenting
the American naval strength, and
also to relieve men now in the serv
ice, who cannot be returned to
civilian life until others have been
secured to take their places.
One cent a word Is all a littl Want
id will cost you.
BILLION DOLLARS
IS RHEIMS' LOSS
(CoLtinucd from Page One.)
Prussian war and which they then
considered sufficiently large to ruin
France, commercially and Indus
trially for years to come.
In spite of this terrific cost, due
in part to the increased cost of build
ing materials resulting from the war,
Rheims is losing no time rising from
its ruins. For the reconstruction of
the city 20 complete plans have been
submitted by leading architects of
Paris and other French cities. No
one plan will be adopted, but the
city will pick out ot each the fea
tures that seem the most desirable,
end arrive at a final plan which will
be approved by .the city council.
Amongst the details already de
cided upon are big, broad streets
for the principal arteries; worklng
i men's quarters, with gardens, and
three series of boulevards, like those
' of Paris and Brussels, forming com
plete circles', there being one inner
circle and finally an outer circle.
It has also been decided that the
buildings encircling the cathedral,
nearly all of which are now in a com
plete state of demolition, will be
cleared out entirely in order that the
cathedral may occupy a vast open
square where all of its beauty may
be seen from any point.
