Have you ever stopped to consider the real significance TO YOU of the trademark or brand name on the package or label of the article you buy at the store? Hare you ever stopped to think that the presence of an advertised trademark on a can of pork and beans, for example, is a, guarantee that these beans are of good quality? This must be true, else the adver tising would defeat its own purpose. The trademark, being a mark of identification, is as much a means of rejection as of selection. That is, it the article so identified proves unsatisfactory you are en abled by the trademark to avoid it a second time. , "Manifestly, a manufacturer could not afford to put a brand name or trademark on an unsatisfactory .product. People would not buy it a second time and be would run him self out of business almost imme diately. A manufacturer backs a branded product by his reputation. There fore, he cannot afford to stake his reputation on any product that is not good. It is only when he puts on the market a satisfactory product, one which people will like aud call for a second time, that he can afford to put the mark of identification upon it. ' But when he has such a product he wants people to know that it is his. Every package he sells then helps to build a reputation for him and his goods. Advertised, trademarked goods then are most apt. to be GOOD GOODS. The advertised trademark Is your guarantee of quality. We trust that before Mr. Cobb ar rives a change will be made in the banners advertising his coming now carried by local delivery cars. If not, we may some day expect to find ourselves famous in his writings as the town which is noted for super fluous ease. STATE ISSUES BECOME CLEAR (Continued from Page 1.) which seems to be fairly well on the road to solution, as all members of the legislature are now virtually agreed that state aid must be re moved and that the application of the compensation act . should be made compulsory. The state aid will be removed for two years at least, that is certain, and the other features of making the act compulsory will . probably be thrown over to the people for their decision. Whether or not state aid will be permanently removed will also probably be left up to the peo ple. This involves some rather careful handling if details, but it has been determined that it is up to this session to oil the machinery to make the amendment workable for all time. Finances I.cs Involved. To take the big problems up briefly one by one. It may be said in the first instance that the financial problem is well "along toward solution. The ways and means committee now has bout $1, 000, 000 cut oft from the budget requirements with a long road yet to follow, and many places where slicing may be done along the road. In cutting out these things it may be remarked that the higher educational institutions are going to be kept very nearly down to an actual millage basis by the present session. Very few new buildings will be allowed for any state institutions and a number of seemingly useless functions will 'be done away with. The work of the ways and means committee may be entirely upset It some radical sort of a consolidation program comes along and requires a general readjustment, but whatever occurs, the committee' now -has the situation well enough in hand so that tor actual state needs, as set out in the budget, It will be able to keep the legislature inside of the amend ment. Of course, it the legislature insists on enacting a scad of approp riation bills outside of the budget requirements, that will be another story, as Kipling remarks, and there may be some decided difticuities to encounter. Plans for Soldiers Chaotic As to reconstruction, that is still in a chaotic stage. Both, houses have a special reconstruction com mittee and in each house a land set tlement bill has been received. One in the senate from Eddy applies to soldiers and sailors alone, provides for an appropriation of $500,000, and is a replica of the measure of Secretary of the Interior Lane, which gives two alternative plans for land settlement, one by the state furnish ing the land and the government OLD AGE STARTS WITH Science says that old are begins with weakened kidneys and digestive urgaiis, Tbis being true, it is easy to believe that by keeping the kidneja nnl I'igeH tive organs cleansed and in proper work ing order oid age can bo deferred and life prolonged far beyond that eujoyed by the average person. GOLD MEDAL Haarlem Oil is inclosed in odorless, tasteless capsules contain ing about 5 drops earn. How many times have you read In the paper something like this: , "On Saturday last, Miss Marguerite Keith rolled up thrno $100.00 bills, two $50.00 bills, a few $10.00 bills and $5.00 bills. In all $476.00. She mudo'as small a parcel or roll as, possible of It us she could, nnd, like all d nun titers of Eve, put It where she thought to be tho safest place In her stocking. "This $476.00, the saving of many years of toll and snlf-denlul, was lost somewhere between her home and the Blank department store." ' Here is the object of this story: There are fully 6,000,000 Miss Keiths In the United States who should know the proper place in which to put tholr savings Is in the bank. ' The money is safe here, and you pay all your bills by check. Central" Oregon Bank TIRE 4) STORAGE ) """S. lard. J financing thn improvements through loans, and the other by llio state furnishing equipped farms, which will be sold on long time amortization payments. ' In the house Richardson has a bill which provides for laud settlement for all alike, whether soldiers, sail ors or citizens of the United States only. His plan carries an appropri ation of $210,000 and provides for the equipping of farms, much as the second alternative in the I'ddy bill. Both of these measures are before the reconstruction committees. Tho reconstruction committee of the house has also secured passage of a resolution calling upon all of the peopje of the state having ideas along reconstruction lines to submit them to the committee in assisting It to frame some general plan of legis lation. . The highway programme has so far been made rather uncertain by the appearance of many bills hit ting at the patented pavements, and royalties, and what nots, and not going at the heart of the situation, that people really want good roads. Will Double Licences. In a general way It Is safe to pre dict that automobile licenses will be at least doubled; that a $10,000,000 bond issue will be decided upon; thut probably a tax of one cent per gal lon on gasoline will be imposed and that the legislature will not attempt to change the present highway map but will go ahead and complete the trunk lines first. If tills is done three or four roads will be constructed In and out of Bend. This much was made plain by the highway commis sion when it appeared before the leg islature and the commission told the body that its plans involved the east and west and north and south roads out of Bend. ' Much has been said of consolida tion. What is to be done in that line can better be told later, and will be deferred for the present until something more definite appears. Sufficient to say that the committee is busy and so far there has ap peared very little opposition from the usual state house lobby. There are thousands of things In which you must keep tip. It's not enongh trt think well In terms of busl ness. The average business innn must watch his habits, dress, speech, and companionship. They are nil sign boards of his standing. The man nhove the nvernge takes enre of every thing that advertises him and his busi ness. The pious Hindu believes the snake to be the reincarnation of some human being, possibly a great philosopher, and he has the assurance that tho del ties he worships will protect hi in from these venomous reptiles. Sometimes one sees n Hindu before on altar In a temple, with a serpent In the folds of his clonk. Suddenly he permits the snnke to sting him, showing tho blood flowing from an undisputed wound, ne then takes a black Hlonrjfrom his pock et, rubs It over the bleeding spot, then muttering mnny Incantations ho mnkes passes over his body. A few momenta Inter he assures his audience Hint the bite, which would have been poison ous otherwise, wns made harmless by his prnyers nnd liiciiiitntlons offurcd to tho deity.' Planting Bulbs. The easiest wny to plant bulbs la to use n dibble or n litilh-plnrilnr. A dib ble Is, In Its slmiiloxt form, only n round slick slightly larger than the bulbs, with one end pointed. Those purchased nt the stores usually have a curved handle. A very good dibble enn be mndo from an old garden fork or spade bundle by cutting It off about a foot from thn end. Tho handle will bo found convenient. You can be sure of planting tho bulbs nt a uniform depth, If you measure the dlstnnce on the dibble and drive a nail Into the wood or make a chalk mark nt the right place. Some gardeners pnlnt hands an Inch opart on their dibbles for convenience. NOTK'K. Bund rehearsals will bo hold Sun day at 2 o'clock nnd Tliiirstlu at 7:110. Adv.foblp W. GLAZI1CU.
