La Kollette has demanded that the
Senate committee on privileges and
elections dismiss the disloyalty
charges filed against him by the
Minnesota public safety commission.
It is asserted through his attorney
that there was nothing disloyal in
La Follette's St. Paul speech when
he declared that the United States
did not have sufficient grievances to
warrant a declaration of war.

JOINS MARINE CORPS
PHILADELPHIA, May 21 Kver
hear of a town so quiet and orderly
that the entire police force, in order
to get something to keep them busy,
enlisted in the Marine corps?
That is the case of the little town
of Mauch Chunk, Pa., which recently
waved a fond farewell to its whole
police department without a qualm
of fear for its own safety as the men
left for Paris Island. S. C, the Ma
rine corps training camp.
The force consisted of four able
bodied men Robert Mader. Clinton
Mader, Charles Shutt and Chester
B.'sby.
The jail at Mauch Chunk has not
been occupied by a prisoner since
last Christmas, hence the departure
of the guardians of the peace.

DUBLIN. May 21. Outwardly

the streets are thronged with men
discussing the arrests of more than
one hundred Sinn Feiners. rendering
the organization practically loader
less. New leaders have been ap
pointed, but they are apparently
moderates and are not advising
forceful resistance of conscription.
The government has announced that
evidence will soon be published prov
ing that the Sinn Keiners have
plotted with Germany.

the word from Salem recently that
summer rates would not be offered
by the railroads, all Oregon rail
roads offered a special rate of one
and one-third fare from all points
east and south of Portland to Sea
side today because of the Odd Fel
lows' state encampment that opened
here. The S. P. & S. ran a special
train here from Portland.

eighth grade; Goldie Ferry and Don-
avan Smock, seventh grade.
Wm. Ferry and family attended
the track meet In Prineville Satur
day. The Jolly Neighbors will meet with
Mrs. Mary Benn Wednesday after
noon and more Red Cross work un
dertaken. Wm. Wilson of Powell Butte was
looking after his Interests in Alfalfa
Thursday.
