At all times save as aaea sagar, wheat, meat and fat as passible. FAT SAVING. We use twice as much fat as some of our allies. The amount used here should be not more than three-quar ters of a pound per person per week and six ounces for children under ten. Use butter as sparingly as possible on the table, except for children. Do not use it in cooking. Peanut butter, jellies, or a nut and Tig paste are excellent substitutes. Use less pastry. When you do make pies, use one crust instead of two. Try the New England deep apple pie, with only a top crust. Use the vegetable fats instead of animal fats in making the pastry. If vegetable oils are used the quantity of fat may be reduced by one third; that is, 2 34 tablespoons of oil to one cup of flour is sufficient. . The oil itself helps to moisten the Tlour so that very little water is nec essary. The dough should be made as dry as possible to make a tender pastry. Do not fry tin deep fat. Bake croquettes in the oven. Make meat-loaf instead of meat croquettes. Either do not use recipes calling for a large quantity of fat or try re ducing the amount. 1X)B CONSERVATION' PIE CRUSTS. Commeal ('runt. Grease a pie plate well. Cover with raw corn meal, giving the plate a ro tating maBion so that an even layer of the meal will stick to the plate about 1-16 of an inch in thickness. Fill the plate with pumpkin pie mixture. Bake In a hot oven. Individual Pies Oatmeal CruHt. 3 cups finely ground oatmeal. At the Grand Theatre Sunday and Monday. 1 cup boiling water, 1 teaspoon fat. Scald the oatmeal with the water. Add fat and mix thoroughly. Roll very thin and line small pie or tart tins with the mixture. Bake in a hot oven. Fill with apricot marmalade or other thick mixture. If desired, spread a meringue on top and brown in the oven. For Fireside PesHimLstn. The hereditary fear of a cat's eye forms the basic influence that causes the number of complications to arise in Augustus Thomas' famous play, "The Witching Hour," a screen ver sion of which, produced by the Froh man Amusement Corporation, under the direction of George Irving, wilt be shown at the Grand Theatre, com mencing Sunday. This beautiful and all-absorbing subject receives wonderful treatment at the hands of a most unusual cast of screen and stage favorites, headed by C. A. Smith, Jack Sherrlll and Mario Shotwell. The production Is unusual In its dramatic treatment and decidedly elaborate in its setting. The main theme. carried throughout the produc tion might briefly be summed up in a very few "words, "As we think evil, so will evil occur." The cast employed in this produc tion Is a large one, and the Interior properties and furnishings are valued in excess of $50,000. "Reaching for the Moon," Douglas Fairbanks' latest production for Art- craft, coming to the Liberty for Sun day matinee and night and Monday, was written by Anita Loos and John Emerson, expressly for the noted star who fairly revels In the part of Alexis a youth occupying a humble position in a button factory until he was dis covered the missing heir to an Euro pean throne. Artcraft has been lav ish with this production, which Is crammed full of humorous situations and thrilling incidents. The adventures of Alexis are ex tremely trying, and Fairbanks Is af forded ample opportunity of display ing the extraordinary athletic skill for which he Is noted. Alexis learns that the royal road is a rocky one. He Is beset at every turn by assassins who constantly hatch plots against him.
