Soldiers Show Appreciation
For Bend Christmas Boxes
Women of Bend who took part in
preparing the Christmas boxes sent
to Camp Lewis by the Needlecratt
club may feel satisfied with their
work and contributions. Two let
ters received by Mrs. R. W. Leon
ard, president of the club, 'thanking
the members for the gift received
from Bend, bear testimony to this
statement. One from a captain in
the quartermasters division reads as
follows:
"My Dear Mrs. Leonard: This is
to let you and the members of your
good club know that the splendid
Christmas packages you made up for
oar good soldier boys, found their
Nvay to this depot, and were present
ed to the enlisted men and officers
here.
"It would have done you all a
world of good if you could have seen
them when the gifts were distributed,
and you may all find happiness in
the knowledge that it gave them a
splendid Christmas! not so much for
the intrinsic value of the presents,
but in knowing that the good wo
men of our country are standing
right behind the boys in what must
be the greatest effort of their lives.
"My men are -mostly all cowboys of
the northwestern states, and a finer
set of men never gathered together.
They are happy in the service and
will render a good account of them
selves here or 'over there'. In their
behalf, let me thank you most sin
cerely for your loving thoughtfulness
in making them happy on the one
Christmas they will remember the
balance of their lives. Sincerely
yours. J. W. JACKSON, Captain Q.
M. C, Commanding."
Another amply expresses a sol
dier's gratitude. It reads:
"Dear Madam: Gun wipers, well
I should smile, it is just what I need
ed, and believe me when I say they
came just in time, as I was about to
rip an undershirt in two. Without a
doubt they saved me two things one
an undershirt, another a possible
trial for being short an undershirt,
therefore you can realize my appre
ciation of the same.
"I want to thank you many times
for your kindness, the women of the
Rose State have done wonders to
help make the soldier boys here hap
py, and truiy deserve mentioning
of it.
"Thanking you once more for your
thoughtfulness, and wishing you a
happy and joyous New Year, I remain
Very sincerely yours, JAMES PO
LOUS, Camp Lewis, Wash."

SHERIFF'S HOMESTEAD
RIGHTS CONSIDERED
Br United Pros to the Bend Bulletin)
WASHINGTON, D. C, Jan. 2.
The question has come up from Bend,
Or., to Senator Chamberlain, whether
6r not S. E. Roberts, sheriff of Des
chutes county, who recently made a
homestead entry, Is relieved from the
resident and cultivation requirements
of the land laws by reason of the
fact that he is serving as chairman
of the local exemption board. The
land office replies that it does not
construe the law to relieve Sheriff
Roberts from the usual conditions of
homesteading because of his service
on the exemption board. In any
event, a 'person thus relieved must
5iave initiated his entry or applica
tion prior to entering the military
service.
