Even though the Commercial club will not initiate any organized move ment to bring conventions to the city it is apparent that we shall not want for this sort of publicity so long as we have such citizens as have worked alone to bring the meetings here that are scheduled for next year. Two conventions are already assured for 1918 and a third seems likely if yes terday's action by the Commercial club bears fruit. All, however, have been obtained in the main by indi vidual effort and it seems extremely unfortunate that such should be necessary. Some time ago we suggested that the Commercial club appoint a per manent committee on conventions whose duty should be to try to obtain the holding of the annual meetings of orders and associations here, and when they were obtained, to assist in the entertainment. We now venture to renew the suggestion. It is ap parent that we can depend on the Bend members of all these orders to try to bring conventions here, but they often need help which can come best through such an organization as the Commercial club. Yesterday's action showed this and It also sug gested that if the help were available early enough it would be an aid in getting the desired result. Why leave the matter to individual effort? Dollar for Good Excuse; Offer Made by Coos Bay Man rOHTLAN'n, Doc. 13 Wlion Louis J. Simpson, of North BimiiI, Ion mint he was appointed Coos and Curry county chairman of the Christmas membership drive for the American Red Cross, he got busy at once. Not only did ho complete organiza tion insido two days of every pre cinct in the two countlfs, but he made the remarkable offer that ho would finance any citizen of those counties who was unable to put up the Jl required for membership in the Red Cross. "I will provide the $1 membership fee tor everyone in Coos or Curry counties, who furnishes a genuine ex cuse for inability to Join the Red Cross," snlit Mr. Simpson. If any such are found the names will ho turned In by campaign work ers, and each will secure a member ship with the compliments of Mr. Simpson. Mr. Simpson declared that both Coos and Curry counties will igo over their quotas when ho railed at cam paign headquarters In Portland. II. K. Reed, slate campaign manager, as sured him there were other counties that would equal his, if not sur pass it. lengthen ns the casualty lists grow, If n soldier Is captured, Germany under International law Is required to report to this government through diplomatic channels, which takes uhout six weeks. The procedure Is practlcully the sumo in the navy. ICRAVYFOH DINNER IS I DIIT IV ftlTADAVTlVI,' The protection offered a member of the Commercial club by the rule adopted yesterday of requiring ap proval by a secret committee before giving to solicitors and random sub scription papers should be the means of developing the club materially. Possession of the membership card will become a bar to the scheme which is not approved; once it is passed, the chief question to be answered will be, "How much can I give?" All other questions will be settled by the committee. ' It should be worth so much to have this protection that every merchant in town who does not now belong to the club should want to become a member at once. Speaking of conventions, is the Commercial club planning anything by way of entertainment for the teachers who will be in Bend next week to attend the Crook-Deschutes institute? We cannot all have service flags in the window, but we need only a dol lar to get a Red Cross service poster. Families To Be Informed Of Fate Of Each Soldier (By United Press to The Bend Bulletin.) WASHINGTON, D. C, Dec. 13. The War and Navy Departments to day through the United Press urged relatives of enlisted men not to bom bard the departments with queries for details concerning men mentioned in casualty lists. Officials of both departments re peated assurances that every detail concerning men killed, wounded or taken prisoner, will be wired their families the minute it Is available. It is impossible to get more than the bare announcement in less than from two to six weeks. The army casualty work is in change of Major J. S. Jones. Here is how it works: In every regiment both In this country and in Pershing's forces several enlisted men record each casualty. They report these lo their commanders who send the re ports Immediately to headquarters whence they are cabled v .lout ilo luy to Washington. Major Jones at once telegraphs to the person mentioned in tho soldier's emergency address on tile at the War Department, tolling all he knows about what happened to the soldier. Later on detailed written reports ns to how the men were killed or wound ed are mailed to the War Depart ment.
