What have you done today to help
win the war?
A PROPER QUARANTINE.
The Portland city commissioners
have just passed an ordinance which
marks the greatest step taken for the
eradication of what is politely known
as the "social disease" since quack
medical advertising was forbidden.
Hereafter, when a physician treats a
case of this nature or when a drug
gist supplies any of the medicines
used in its treatment he must record
the name of the patient and report it
to the city auhtorities.
The diseases which are the subject
of this ordinance, physicians agree,
are more serious than many against
which strict quarantine rules are now
enforced. Now they are to be quar
antined. This tardy recognition of
the proper course to follow to erad
icate them may be taken as one of
the results of the war, the most ter
rible thing the world has ever known
and at the same time the thing which
is bringing about so many blessings
lor mankind.
Shortly after dark Inst night a
heavily laden auto truck hauling lum
ber for the Pine Tree mill came along
Newport avenue and when It arrived
at the far end of the Pilot Butte
bridge a rear wheel sank down into
a cliuckliole rilled with sand. The
driver put on speed and the wheel
churned a nice little resting place
down in the road while the car re
fused to budge. Lumber began to
slip and soon was spread over the
north side of the street in an effectual
blockade. And so the truck remained
there.
Very soon another automobile came
along. This time It was A. J. Kroe
nert. of the Pine Tree mill, in his
touring car. He saw he couldn't get
past on the easier grade, so he
climbed the south side, where the
city has been putting in a fill. In
dodging the stranded lumber carrier
he encountered a huge rock which
had managed to get moved Into the
center of the south road. So there
he stuck.
Newport avenue was now blocked
and by 7 o'clock In the evening per
haps six machines were stalled in the
road while others driving as far as
the bridge, turned back and crossed
ou other spans.
The city will take steps today to
make the street once more passable.
All the pockets in the soft side of the
street' will be filled in, for at pres
ent an auto can hardly dodge the
deep holes without running Into the
stone wall where the other side of
the street is being raised.
COMPROMISE.
A short time a.50 there was agitat
ed the proposal to stop road work all
over the country In order to release
men for other forms of labor. That
died down and the next thing heard
was that an effort was being made
to develop roads over which heavy
trucking might be done in order to
relieve the railroads of a part of the

"A Military
Necessity"
Gtntrml Dtdft,
FROM its beginning, the Union Pacific has been
"The National Railroad," a patriotic institution.
Lincoln and other great men urged its construction
for national protection and development.
The prophetic vision of those
who founded this great railroad
daring a period of national stress
is now apparent in these times of
international conflict Again the
Union needs its Union Pacific.
The Union Pacific is doing its
utmost to expedite the enormous
war shipments from the Treasure
States it serves. Grain, cattle, min
erals, lumber, wool and oil are
needed as never before.
For new equipment alone the
Union Pacific is spending over
$16,000,000 to give American peo
ple and industries still better ser
vice. This is aside from even greater
sums necessary for double-tracking,
additional yard and engine
1917 Gl
facilities and other improvements
designed to add to the traffic carry
ing capacity of the property.
Just now some of our ordered
equipmit is unobtainable for im
mediate delivery because our Allies
must be served first so we will
win. The Union Pacific and The
Union Pacific States must use
available equipment to its greatest
efficiency.
The 41,000 employes of the
Union Pacific and the 11,000,000
people of the western wealth-producing
states now have an interna
tional obligation to fulfill.
Were Lincoln to speak today In
behalf of the Union Pacific, as he
urged its building, he would insist
on those high service standards for
which we are striving.
