NINE BASKETS ARE SENT OUT BY WOMEN AT THE HOTELS. SELF-PROTECTION. The new plan now under consid eratlon by a Commercial clu1 com' mittee to censor money raising activ ity in Bend is a good one. Any plan which will lessen the burden of sub scription papers should have the full est co-operatTon of the members the club and the merchants of the town. Indeed, if the club begins to . render a real service of this nature it ought to attract more members and be able to place itself on a stronger financial tasis. Various plans for the protection of merchants are worked In differ ent places. Ordinarily a committee is appointed and any solicitor must place his proposition before It and re ceive its indorsement before he can eesk funds with any prospect of sue 'cess. That Is, without the commit tee recognition, the solicitor is lack ing the credentials necessary to have his proposition listened to. That is a condition precedent. This -plan is objected to in some places, however, because it lays the . individual members open to pressure when properly a scheme should be considered nowhere except in com imittee meeting. To take its place, according to a recent article in a New York magazine, a Kansas town has . organized a secret committee. Anyone who 'wishes to circulate subscription paper in that town first must place his proposition before the manager of the Commercial club who. In turn, takes it before the secret committee. The manager then re ports the committee decision. That seems to us the best idea yet), but whatever plan is chosen it ought to relieve our present situation. OLD BOOKS ARE NOW , BECOMING POPULAR Tastes of Bend Readers Changes Library Is Again Favorite Resort. Old books that people refused to read three or four years ago are com ing back into popularity in Bend, according to Miss M. E. Coleman, city librarian. The particular Incident which caused Ler to make this state ment was the partial emptying of the shelf whereon thirty new volumes of Cooper's works reposed a few days ago. Fifteen now remain, an un precedented circumstance in the an nals of the library. Dickens' too. is! coming back into his own and his! books are In circulation constantly Jiow. Tastes may differ in Bend but there are five books which are sel dom at home on the shelves. These are the two popular novels, "The Eyes of the World" and "Riders of the Purple Sage," for the fiction lov ers, then for students of the war, "Over the Top" and "Germany and the Next War." The fifth volume Is "The l,lfe of Lincoln," which Is al ways popular, according to Miss Cole man. Much interest has been shown in the 'books on Russia. In addition to the members of the Bend Study Club many others have taken them out.
